Meme's

I got tagged by Brian a few days ago to post 7 random things about myself. I started working on the post and then realized that I had already started something similar a long time ago! I had decided to do a spin on this whole # of things about me meme that was going around forever ago. I think a lot of my friends and family come here for the pictures more than reading about my track splits so I challenged myself to include an appropriate picture with each # on the list. This proved to be quite an endeavor as it involved a lot of scanning of old non-digital photos but was definitely a fun way of looking back at all that has made me who I am today. So here we go (in no particular order) and as a bonus you get way more than 7 with photos where I could dig them up!

1)I learned to swim when I was a baby. Seriously I took classes with my mom. I have been a water lover ever since.

2)Chip and Dale (the Disney Characters) were my favorite.

3)Apparently I have ridden a camel.

4)I have one sibling, my younger sister.

5)I have 16 first cousins. Most of them are older than me and I have more 2nd cousins than I can easily count that are closer to my age.

(Note this is just my mothers side)

6)I never met my mothers mother, and only have one real grandma.

7)Family is extremely important to me but I currently do not want children of my own.

8)My family are all avid golfers. I have a mean drive but only get out once or twice a year.

9)I was in Ballet for one "season." The day of the recital they changed all the directions of the dance to suit the new stage. I was so confused I have no idea what I did come stage time (memory block) but I am sure it wasn't pretty.

10)I tried out for a community theaters production of Annie when I was about 8 and foiled the dance audition majorly. Guess I didn't learn much in ballet classes.

I know this is from King and I but I don't have any from the audition I bombed ;)

11)I was in two different community theater productions of The King and I and both times played the little princess who gives that speech asking Anna to stay. "Dear Mrs. Anna please do not leave us..." I think I got the part because my mom was a regular lead lady in the community theaters. Everyone say "we love nepotism."

12)I have been running since 6th grade.
(Photo was in 7th)

13)I ran almost every race in middle school with untied laces and almost always ended up throwing my glasses at someone. (before I was introduced to contacts)

14) I swear that all that were with me when shopping for this dress were in awe. I am in awe too, of how I ever could have picked out a velvet and sequined dress for my first prom dress. In my defense 2 other girls wore the same thing (one in green and one in navy blue)

15)I played at Carnegie hall my sophomore year of high school.

16)In high school I thought I was fat: weighing in at about 105-115 pounds.

17)My date to senior prom did not dance a single dance with me.

18)I like to eat, A lot! I have been known to have friendly eating contests with buds since high school... I usually win.

19)I graduated 10th out of 357 in my High School Class, academics were extremely important to me.

20)Our high school band program had a Halloween concert every year where we would decorate the whole auditorium and the parents would pull together and create all kinds of special effects for an amazing concert. My favorite was Mr. Soja as a bumblebee flying across the stage while we played Flight of the Bumblebee. So cool. All of the bands were onstage and in costume. Pretty damn amazing.

I'm Bo Peep, A bunch of friends were my sheep, to the far right is a jazz band player, all those sheep wore shades :)

21)I was a pole vaulter my senior year of high school...I never cleared the pole.

22)I was in a local sorority all 4 years of college.

23)I have been to Belize. It is extremely lovely there and they have the best beer, Belikin.

(I'm the frozen shadow on the left, that water was icy cold!)

24)I met my husband at a fraternity party.

25)While dating, David and I lived and worked together for a whole summer. If you can survive that you can survive anything.

26)David proposed to me in the gazebo in Chagrin Falls.

27)My wedding day was probably the fattest day of my life.

28)We honeymooned in Cancun.

29)The Chicago Triathlon is one of my all time favorite races. My first Chi Tri still goes down as one of the best days of my life.

30)I am a tree hugger. I constantly worry about the state of our environment.

31)I love the outdoors. I could hike all day.

32)I want to be a park ranger but am happy in environmental consulting and will probably end up volunteering for the park system when I retire.

33)When I started my job I was in an office with no window. I commissioned my friend to paint me a city. It hangs in my new office as my second window.

34)I was a LOT happier the night before my first marathon than directly afterwards, I immediately after the race was not happy, with anything! Still have no clue where that feeling came from. I literally did not care that I had just qualified for Boston on my first marathon attempt. I was not happy and thought that anyone who did this kind of event was an idiot. Then a few weeks later I signed up for Boston and haven't felt that way since!

35)I love to read and wish I had more time to just be absorbed in books

36)I did not sleep at all the night before my first sprint triathlon

37)I still get butterflies before races of all distances

38)My grandparents have been married for more than 50 years and still remain best friends. I hope the same will happen for my parents and for David and I.

39)I want to learn how to "hip-hop" dance. I love dancing.

40)In high school I played saxophone in the pit for Crazy For You and was an onstage wench in The Man of La Mancha. In college I played in the pit for a high school production of Grease.

41)I am terrified of needles. I usually come close to fainting whenever someone even brings them up. I have one tattoo, a white tiger. I had it done in Montreal. I'm still afraid of needles.

42)I shoot pool left handed. (does this make me ambidextrous?)

43)I am an ultrarunner

44)I am a half ironman

45) I've hiked through Bryce Canyonlands

46)I met Bill Rogers

47) I have never had the best fashion taste

48&49)I was on my middle school swim team (and had bad perms several times in middle school)

50)I drink Bud Light. (It is usually my beer of choice, sorry Casey!)

51)I'm a U of M fan even though I went to Heidelberg, my sister went to Michigan State, and I live in Ohio.

52)I've played paintball once and got shot in the neck at close range. I probably won't ever play again.

53)I was captain of the cross country and track teams my senior year of high school.

54)I've always loved bubbles

55)In college I smuggled my pet Egyptian Spiny Mice into the dorm. They were cute, often doing blackflips to try and escape.

56)I have hugged tigers and posed with cougars

(I tried hard to get to 100 but lost enthusiasm after 56, I had a few more that I couldn't find pictures for so this is what you get!)

If you have the patience or time consider yourself tagged!

Weekly Rundown-Boston Training Week 2

Neck and back are feeling much better! Still got a wonky left shoulder/arm that I am hoping was just overworked at Tampa, perhaps overcompensating for the arm carrying the sign into the wind? Or perhaps just a pinched nerve from all the flying. Who knows, but I hope it cuts it out soon because right now I look like Rocky running down the street flicking/punching my fist out all the time.

Got in all my planned runs last week and threw in a Body Blast class, an evening yoga class, and did an ab pilates DVD. I need to get my butt on the bike and in the pool soon as I have an indoor tri coming up in two weekends that is part of the Beast series. I'm waiting on a free two week pass to CSU and then I will suck it up and buy a membership. (For those that asked to get the "non-prime" membership you have to commit to one year, but if you do automatic withdrawal you just have to pay month-to-month in addition to a $50 initiation fee)

Monday- Body Blast ~45 minutes Worked on legs, arms, core. Not quite as nice as my hard bodies class, but it will do.

Tuesday- 5 easy miles on the treadmill

Wednesday- 5 miles with Jen on the CSU indoor track (Jen, Salty thinks it is actually more like 10.5 laps to a mile so with our cool down walk we definitely got in our 5)

Thursday- 60 minutes yoga with Jen

Friday- 60 minutes general aerobic run with Salty. The workout called for 7 miles with 8*100 meter strides. Since Salty was doing 8 with 20*35 seconds at 5k pace, I just did the first 8 of her 35 second on/1:25 off intervals with her, and then continued to loop the flats to get in the rest of my mileage. Glad I dragged my ass outside. I was becoming a winter sissy.
(Probably ran a little over 7, average pace was around 8:40 when on my own, and about 8:15 with Salty, can we tell I need to get my butt motivated?)

Saturday- 5 miles at N. Chagrin on snowy trails. Just getting in the miles at an easy pace. With the slop it was about 10 minute miles.

Went home and did the Winsor abs DVD and some stretching of my hips.

Sunday- 10 Miles with SERC, 8:00 pace. It was nice to let go a little and run at a more normal pace. I was getting sick of the recovery miles!

Tried to do the little running times core workout from this month in the bagel shop. After the first 4 exercises I gave up though and decided this was a workout suited more for the gym or home :) (I'll post photo evidence later)

Two weeks down, 8 to go to Boston.

Need to work on getting back into a schedule. Tampa and Indiana have me all screwed up. I need to get my ass out of bed when the alarm goes off so I can get the miles in before work! Looking forward to seeing how I handle the longer midweek runs. I don't think I have ever done more than 8 on a weekday (other than doubles).

Step away from the computer

This week has been hectic at work. We have a new coworker who is gung ho which has us all inspired, but also has us working like we are in a frenzy! I don't mind being busy, so that suits me fine. But throw in a few odd things like downloading and installing new software and trying it out into the mix, which slows my computer to an absolute crawl and by 5 PM I am literally ready to punch my computer screen. Leaving me to conclude that perhaps the pinched nerve is stress related? Lots of other non work stuff on my plate so I think that may be the ticket.

So the past few nights I've gone to bed early, hooked up the heater pad and read for a bit and magically the neck and back feel better.

My schedule is all screwed up from Tampa and Indiana and the fact that I am technically in recovery mode so dragging my butt out of bed for AM workouts has not been happening. Not to mention that I haven't been able to bring myself to run outside since Sunday. I am so over winter :) Hopefully this isn't seasonal affective disorder, and just a sign that I needed a few more hours of sleep. (I get crazy amounts of sleep people, if I told you what extra means you would all guffaw so I'll just keep that to myself)

Running indoors with my buddy Jen last night was a nice way to end the day and get me a bit more motivated (my shoulder finally felt semi normal during a run!). I am going to sign up for the "Prime" membership at CSU so I can swim in the mornings or evenings there for $27 a month. Seems ridiculous to be paying for two gyms but in the end it is actually cheaper than what I was paying for just one membership at Key (although I do miss my perks: hot tub, sauna, free shower stuff including razors and shaving cream, free fruit, and coffee/tea. I was spoiled). Haven't found an equivalent to my fave hard bodies class yet, but a few are close enough I guess :/

Looking forward to hitting my virgin yoga grounds tonight with Jen. It will be nice to go back to my yoga "roots" for a night. I have one ticket left and then it will be back to the drudgery of whatever the gym offers (which is my other theory for the pinched nerve, too many back manipulation poses!).

For those that had sent well wishes to my sis a little update. She ended up having to have surgery on part of her intestine. Surgery was last night and it went well. She's in a ton of pain right now, but hopefully will heal and be out of the hospital quickly. The doc wants her out as soon as possible. She didn't get much sleep between the pain and a loud roommate so she isn't very chipper right now. Hopefully this won't become a regular trial, it seems so unfair for her to be going through this when she is so young. The good news is there was only one part of her intestine that was bad, but apparently it was really bad and the doc was amazed she was eating anything at all. So keep sending those good vibes if you have them! The doc wants her up and walking around today, so she could probably use any extra positive energy we've got!

Weekly Rundown-Boston Training Week 1

So Boston training has officially started. I decided to go with the Pfitzinger 10 weeks between marathons plan since I just paced Tampa and ran the 50k a few weeks before that.

Week 1 of the plan called for four runs totaling 22 miles for the week as well as three rest days with optional cross training. All runs were to be done at recovery pace.

Monday- Rest
Tuesday- AM: 5 miles treadmill 9:17 pace (Planned 5) with Daisy
Lunch 60 minutes of yoga with Daisy
Wednesday- Rest (In Indiana for work)
Thursday- Light Ab workout (In Indiana for work)
Friday- 45 minute run around downtown with Salty (Planned 5)
Saturday- 5.4 mile run from the in-laws 9:05 pace. Probably too many hills to really be called a recovery run. (Planned 5) Light ab workout following run
Sunday- 6.75 miles in Solon with Daisy. Icy and light rain. 8:55 pace
(Planned 7)

Left shoulder has been stiff my last three runs and since yesterday I've developed a crick in my neck and what I assume is a pinched nerve in my middle back. Not sure what has me so out of whack but I will be enjoying the last week of "restful/recovery training" and will try not to irritate my back and neck.

Tampa Photos

On my way to Indiana for work. Presenting, my favorite ;) Won't be back till Thursday evening. Here's some photos to tide you over until I get back.

Yes the official outfit for this one involved (super short) skirts! Wasn't sure if I'd like it but no chafing, and no one complained that we were too scantily dressed, so they must have been fine! (I did pin my bib across the skirts flap so it wouldn't flap all over in the wind)

You can't see it but we are next to two mannequins who are "running"

Sunrise Saturday morning

get Bucified (I have no clue!)

Most of the official photos are up. You can see me and my "groupies" if you look for number 318

Weekly Run Down (2/4/08-2/10/08)

I took it extremely easy last week with Tampa on the horizon. Just tried to practice 3:50 pace on the treadmill and break in the shoes a bit as well as keep my limbs limber!

Monday- Rest
Tuesday- AM: 5 miles at pace on the treadmill with Daisy at the new gym
Lunch: Yoga with Daisy. Lots of sun salutations. Not quite the light stretching workout I was looking for, hips and shoulders were sore until Thursday, damn those planks!
Wednesday-Rest
Thursday- 3.1 Miles on the treadmill practicing pace with 6*20 seconds strides thrown to loosen up the legs and keep the boredom at bay
Friday- Rested and bummed around Tampa
Saturday- Super easy 2ish mile run and lots of walking back and forth around Tampa
Sunday- 26.2 of fun pacing miles

Now I have two weeks of recovery and then 8 weeks of focused training for Boston. The legs are a bit stiff but walking is normal, a little gingerly on the steps as usual. (I am actually pleasantly surprised since I did not get in much pavement time since JFK.) One monster blister that is going to have to go. Next time I go for the pedicure I am not letting them take away my calluses, it is apparent that I needed those!

Tampa Gasparilla Marathon-3:50 Pacer Report

Another year, another pace job. I was a little less nervous coming into this race being my second pacing experience, but still nervous enough :) I was under the impression I was going to be pacing 4 hours this time around and Pacer Jim gave me the go ahead to "race myself into the ground" at Buckeye 50k. Thankfully I did not race myself into the ground because Tampa had a few tricks up it's sleeve to make today a bit tough, in addition to the fact that I got moved up to 3:50.

We woke up around 4:30 to leave the hotel by 5:20. Race start was at 6AM. It was cool out but I was nervous it would get brutally (to me) hot and humid before long. I had a decent sized group at the start. Three girls aiming for Boston, a few going for PRs, a few just looking to run a good race. I also had 3 or 4 half marathoners. I got a few jitters and was nervous about making sure we were all ready to go at the start. But after a country style star spangled banner and about a 5 minute wait we were off. It was completely dark out and there were lots of turns in the first few miles. A bit treacherous (especially when trying to maneuver around those tuned into i-pods so loud they couldn't here you).

I was a little nervous about talking this race as I have been a bit quiet on my runs lately, but it was apparent when I got to the expo this weekend that talking would be no issue :) I was right and was gabbing away and before we knew it the sun was up and it was almost time for our half marathoners to pull away from us. The half marathoners split from us around mile 7. We were back into downtown here and then we headed out for another small loop until about mile 10.

The first 10 miles went well. Pace was good and I was feeling good about the race. Then all of a sudden the next two miles were fast, really fast (relative to what we want which is to be within 30 seconds of total time every mile). All of a sudden I hit the half and was almost 60 seconds ahead of pace. I did my best to ease pace and asked if there was anyone with a Garmin on to try and see if the markers were accurate. (Post race I think they may have been a bit short, and it turns out there was a strong tailwind which you didn't really notice until you were heading back into it)

We got back within our 30 seconds range of overall as we headed out along the harbor. The sun was out but thankfully it wasn't as hot as I feared it would be. After mile 14 or so we headed back into this beautiful park like neighborhood with these "100 year old"trees with these fuzzy hangings on them. Very neat. I forget how fascinating tropical plants are! There was plenty of shade in this section and I still had a fairly strong group with me. Around 18, just like in San Fran, I started losing a few and gaining a few people. I lost one to cramps, and most others just quietly fell off the pace. It's hard to realize when they fall back unless you were specifically talking to them, and I am not confident any amount of encouragement from me could pull someone through from 18 or 20 if they are already feeling a bit bad or cramping.

W picked up some more people as we came around a little pond and park that was lined with pirate flags. As we rounded the pond the wind kicked up. It was pretty apprent the last 4 miles of the race were going to be tough. The wind was supposed to get up to 14 mph, direct headwind. We were a bit ahead of pace as we ran back through the fuzzy tree park and I wasn't worried about it as a 30 second cushion sounded really nice heading into that wind.

About mile 22 is where things got tricky, we had one slow mile into the wind and all of a sudden we were right on target pace, and I was extremely nervous about holding perfect pace for the last 4 miles into this wind. It was ridiculous, I couldn't imagine how hard it had to be for my group. At this point I was down to two women and one younger guy as well as a Boston bound gal just ahead of us who had been with the group the whole way. I kept encouraging them, letting them know at this point it was painful but it was all in your head now. The body would respond if you willed it forward. The next mile I pushed a bit as it was hard to tell if I was keeping pace. I lost one female and the young guy this mile and ended up being a tad quick, but was happy to have a few seconds to work with the next 3 miles. Thankfully at this point a young man who had run the 15k the day before decided to tag along with us for a way and started chatting us up. This saved me from talking and let me focus on the pace this mile. It was a great distraction from carrying my sign in this crazy wind.

Around 24 the wind dies down for about a mile. After that it came back with about a mile to go. At this point we had ushered our Boston bound gal ahead and our new friend ran ahead to pace her in cheering loudly and telling the crowd that she was headed to Boston. What an awesome guy!

I had one female runner left with me from Minnesota. Let me tell you they grow them tough in Minnesota, because she did such a great job the whole day, especially in that wind! About a half mile from the finish we picked up a TNT guy who had been with the group at the start. He was cramping, but with some water from my handheld and a little "tough love" I got him and my Minnesota gal in under 3:50.

Again no 26 mile sign (whats up with that?) and I was dissapointed to see that I would be coming in a little faster than San Fran. 3:49:44 was the official chip time. I hung out after the finish to chat a bit. My boston bound gal was quite a hoot. Her first marathon and still tons of energy left, very happy and bouncing around, she was ready to go out dancing! Hopefully I'll catch up with her in the future, we may have a pacer in the making! My Minnesota gal did great and we took a photo, not sure I hope to get that or not, my face and hair were covered in salt by the end of the race. I did a good job of making sure my runners got their nutrition in but I definitely should have found a way to get a bit more salt in myself. A few other runners who were with us for the first 10 miles came up to tell me how they did and it was nice to see they went on to have great finishes! Again it was sad that I couldn't get everyone in at their goal but it is such a great feeling when you help the ones that do get in.

The race was very nice. Other than the wind the weather was perfect. Never hot enough that I had to go with the sports bra, so that was good! The Gasparilla Pirate theme was very cool. Cute hats that said "Will Run for Booty," shirts that said "hooked on running," and since the race had decided to go green recycle bins at the finish that said "hooked on recycling." Publix sponsored the race and we got reusable grocery bags instead of the regular plastic goody bag. And at the expo for the low low price of $99 you could get your teeth profesionally whitened. (Am I the only one that finds this bizarre?)

All in all a very nice weekend and another great pacing experience. Met some very fun pacers and runners, and managed to snag closest to the pin despite not being as close as in San Fran!

The legs feel pretty good. Got a few nice blisters and my lower back and quads are a bit stiff, but not too bad. Looking forward to a few easy weeks as I ease into Boston training, but I am not looking forward to the 9 degree weather I am going home to tonight. On that note I think one more swim in the pool is in order before I head to the airport!

3:49:45

Another pacing job completed! 3:49:45 was my watch time so probably within 20 seconds or better. The end was rough, straight into 14 mph headwinds!

Now I'm ready to go scarf down some bar food and hit the pool!

Photos From a Winter Wedding

Remind me to tell you about the shopping for this occasion. Very reminiscent of the PMI and no we aren't talking mortgages here.

I think despite myself I am "aging." You know you are getting old when you leave a wedding before the dancing stops. Or maybe I am just being a better spouse knowing my hubby had to work the next morning, yeah that must be it ;)

(Almost) Ready to Fly

I head to Tampa tomorrow morning. Other then packing I am so ready to get out of the cold! And this winter hasn't even been that bad. I guess I was spoiled by our trip to Arizona!

If you are going to be in Tampa this weekend stop by the expo and say hi! I'll be at the booth tomorrow night and Saturday before lunch. And if you are racing look for me at the start! I'll be the one holding the 3:50 sign ;)

Looking forward to my mini vacay, looks like storms tomorrow so hopefully there's an indoor pool to lounge by, but weather for Sunday looks perfect. Lows of 45, highs of 70. We start at 6 AM so I should be done long before it gets too hot.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Winter Buckeye 50K 2008

So this year will be the year of the Beast for me. No I won't be bulking up (well maybe a little) and intimidating children, I'll be participating in the CTC Beast series. That means participating in 8 of 20 local endurance events to challenge myself and compete against other local athletes for the Beast title! I'm excited!

The first event on tap was the winter Buckeye 50k. With some prodding and the help of the Beast I convinced some running pals to sign up and do this as their first 50k. Meanwhile their official training started as I was ramping down from quite a year. I wasn't worried about the mileage as last year I ran the 50k on a whim and my longest run since JFK had been 13 miles, but I can definitely tell my friends have been getting stronger while I have been recovering!

So Saturday morning we all arrived bright eyed and bushy tailed. After a brief talk from everyone’s fave ultra gal TC we headed outside and were on the Brandywine loop, only once again we wouldn't do the full loop this year due to treacherous river crossings. So really it is a Brandywine out and back.

Brandywine is about 5 miles and is mostly some rolling hills with a bit of towpath and some stairs thrown in for fun. We've trained a lot out here this winter so we were pretty familiar with the course. I headed out with Daisy and Solarsquirrel for the first loop and we chatted away. After the first loop began Solarsquirrel's woes. It just wasn't her day as she was sick to her stomach the entire race.

Daisy and I slowed up a bit on Pine Lane hoping Solar would catch back up. You know Daisy though and as soon as a train of runners came by we were moving again. Just can't let the "rabbits" go! We moved pretty quickly through the rootiest section of Pine Lane, and I would keep looking back to see if Solar was catching up. Surprisingly she did catch up rather quickly at the turn around despite having fallen in the river. So it was the three Amigos again back to Boston Store. Daisy took the lead through the Pine section of Pine Lane and we just cruised. It was nice to be moving quickly and having fun, thoughts of how it probably wouldn’t be so quick in another 13 miles passed through my head.

Made it back to Boston Store and while waiting for Solar we grabbed some grub and talked with MT and AJ who were volunteering. I gave MT my handheld so that it would be full of water and ready to go when I got back for the next Pine Lane group. At this point Wyatt came cruising through off the Brandywine loop; yep he was 5 miles ahead of us! He had a bad blister and since no one was offering up aid I rummaged through my bag and found him a blister band-aid. I don’t think I used any of my extra gear, but I’m glad I had it since I got to help someone out. Solar caught up and before heading out for our second Brandywine loop we stopped to take a photo with MT and AJ, it’s not like we were in a race or anything ;)

The miles from this loop were pretty much the same. We chatted about when we thought Solar's man TB would come along, and it wasn’t very long that’s for sure. I think he passed us as we were heading up the first long steady hill on Brandywine. He looked good and was in the top ten. Eventually we made it back to Boston again. I grabbed my handheld from MT and a bit of grub. I mostly just had trail mix all morning. Wasn’t very hungry except at the start. Daisy and I started walking up the towpath but she got cold and pulled ahead to warm up. I was worried about Solar, so I kept Rita company as we moseyed up Pine Lane for the second time. I kept looking back and realized Solar was not as close this time as before so eventually I let Rita go and I eased the pace. I talked with DR a bit as she passed and before hitting a long steep downhill section I finally walked a bit to let Solar catch up, and boy did she catch up, she caught me and passed me flying down the hills. I am a pretty confident downhill runner but she was moving way faster than I was used to on this section. She just kept saying she wanted Pine Lane over with!

As we neared the aid station KM caught up to us. She had run with her son the first 13 miles and was now making up time on the 50k. I asked her if she would try to catch the 1st girl. She of course was going to give it a shot! Not long after Daisy, WB, and GR were heading back towards us as we neared the Pine Lane aid station. We gave Daisy a wave and moved along. We finally caught up to Bill Bailey here and we ran with him quite a ways back down Pine Lane. I tried my “rabbit” tactic on him and Solar but they were pretty content with their pace and did not pick it up even when I tried to run a bit ahead.

I love this course because you get to see everyone all day long. Every time we would pass our friends I’d give a smile and a holler. Before the pines we passed Mike and Josh and Mike snapped a photo. I guess this is where Josh made his breakaway and hauled ass the rest of the course. We also passed Bloggister here and I think he said, “I thought I heard your voice.” (This is pretty typical for me; everyone knows I am coming because they can hear me talking miles away) I could tell Solar was not a happy camper at this point but she looked a lot better than she did at NCTM so we kept moving. The funniest part of the day was probably when we came to this big downed tree for the fourth time and attempted to “roll” over it. We must have looked like old arthritic ladies trying to maneuver over this thing.

After this it seemed I became “Trash Girl” for the day, as there was lots of litter out on the course that I felt obligated to pick up. By this time I had two gels packets, a Styrofoam cup, and a Gatorade bottle. I must have looked ridiculous trying to stuff the Styrofoam cup and gels into my handheld and carrying the bottle in the other hand. I figure trail karma will come back and bite you if you leave trash on the trail though so I do my part to clean it up out there!

We finally made it to the downhill before Boston and once again Solar was flying. I had to hit the restroom at this point and we ran into the bathroom just as the janitor was getting ready to start cleaning the ladies room. We politely asked if he could wait just a moment while we took care of business and he replied that we could go if we didn’t mind him being in there. GROSS. We asked again if he could just wait one moment and he said he had just started that room making it very clear that he would not budge, so we opted for the men’s room instead. What a weird experience! I swear I attract the crazies!

Got a quick hug from my buddy JC who was waiting to run her hubby in the last five miles, and now it was time for our last 5 miles. Anyone can run 5 miles right? So we moved ahead. I had my brain working with the time we had left to break 6 hours. I let Solar know we had to run 11-minute miles or faster if we wanted to break 6. Frankly I am quite amazed we even had a chance after all the breaks we had made. Girl is tough! So we pressed forward. We must have just missed TB coming in to finish 2nd overall in his first ultra! We joked that he was probably hitting the shower and getting a drink while we were still running.

I tried to keep Solar moving. I knew if we could get to the top of Brandywine in 11-minute miles we’d make it because girl always picks it up when she is closing in on the finish. She was moving pretty slow on the uphills, but made up for it on the flats and downs. We saw Daisy KM move ahead of the first lady here (not surprising) and shortly after saw Diasy cruising along. I was glad to see she still felt great as many others looked like they could use some more energy on that last loop! We made it to the top right on target and I let Solar know we couldn’t slack if we wanted to break 6. Well that must have lit a fire under her because we hauled ass the next 2 miles. I couldn’t believe I went all day at a comfortable pace just to hammer the hell out of my legs in the last two miles. As we approached the towpath Solar asked if we would break 6. I looked at my watch. We had ten minutes to run a half-mile; I told her I thought we were pretty good to go. :) We still hammered in trying to close in on WB and GR. So 5 hours and about 53 minutes after we started we finished with Solar completing her first 50k.

For finishing we were rewarded with some awesome Brooks jackets and the best tasting chili ever! I pigged out as usual and had two bowls. Bob Combs must think I am so disgusting! Every time he has seen me after a long run I have been pigging out. He joked that I was allowed to get seconds as I had filled my bowl to the brim. We waited for all our friends to visit and gave the appropriate congratulations to everyone then it was off to Winking Lizard for some beer and wings. Then I had to head home, shower, and head out to my husbands company’s winter party. Its never a dull day for me I guess.

New Balance 800s Shoe Review

So a while back I was interviewed by Cassie over at the New Balance blog. Following the interview she gave me the opportunity to wear test a pair of trail shoes. We decided on the 800s since they are great for winter and if you haven't noticed (I know it's hard with the random 40, 50, and 60 degrees days we've had thrown in), it is definitely winter here in Cleveland.

I was excited to try out some new kicks and was going to really put them to the test with the first run in them being a 24 miler in snowy and icy conditions. After that it was off to the Phoenix desert and then back to Cleveland for the Winter Buckeye 50k. Not an easy feat for a new pair of shoes for sure! The last time I took a pair of trail shoes out for the first run on a 20 miler I came away with a serious ankle blister, so I was a little bit nervous!

Before receiving the shoe I read a review on them in trail running and was thrilled to see that Trail Running identified these as their "go to" trail shoe. Sounded like just what I need with the variability in my trail running! The shoes were also picked as editor's choice by Runners World. *Note right away that I am a pretty neutral runner and Runner's World made it clear that this shoe is designed for biomechanically efficient/neutral runners.*

The shoes arrived just in time for my icy 24 miler with Daisy and I was super thrilled upon opening the box to find that these shoes definitely pass the "cool" factor test. The shoes look sweet. Mine are a purple/maroon color and I would be more than happy to wear these as sporty kicks around town. I was actually sad I would have to get these puppies dirty. The tongue is built in to prevent dirt getting in, and they feel super light, yet have a ton of traction. I love a minimal yet efficient shoe so I had high hopes for these.

Upon further inspection I was even more thrilled to see that NB is making extraordinary efforts for their products to be 100% made in America. They let you know that in many cases that isn't possible due to certain materials not being available here, but they note that a product will not be labeled made in America unless it is at least 70% materials and work from the USA. I can definitely get behind that.

Well short story these shoes pass the E-Speed test. I took these bad boys out for 24 icy miles and they performed great. No slippage, no blisters, and my feet still felt great after 5+ hours on rooty, icy, uneven trails.

Next test was rocks, I was a little worried that with the minimal weight these shoes would leave my feet with a beating if I had to travel over a lot of rocks. So I took them out for a 7.5 mile trip around the desert. I hit the Christensen trail which was a relatively rocky trail with lots of dirt thrown in. The shoes did great. My feet felt fine and my ankles didn't turn once.

The last test was to see if the shoes felt good for an entire ultra. This year the Buckeye 50K was not as sloppy or icy as last year, but there are still the rooty sections of Pine Lane and some serious ankle turning frozen mud footprints. I had thrown my stand by trail shoes in my bag at the start in case anything happened. But I needn't have bothered. The 800s did a great job out on the course and my feet felt no worse for wear after the 50k.

At $80 I have to give these shoes two thumbs up. I'll definitely purchase a pair when these run out of mileage. I still want to go and get these muddy. I'll let you know how they fare when I do, but if you are a neutral runner and you like a minimal/fast trail shoe I'd highly recommend this one!

Weekly Run Down Week of 1/28/08

Last week was a sort of taper/recovery week but as I felt fine after the Buckeye 50k I ran most of the days of the week and will dip into a true taper for Tampa this week. Just found out I got bumped up to the 3:50 pace group as one of the pacers had an injury so I want to make sure I am ready to go Sunday morning! 3:50 suits my tastes much better than 4 hours anyways!

Monday- Ran at lunch with Daisy and Salty about 7 miles somewhere around 8:40 pace

Tuesday- AM: Indoor Stationary Bike Ride EZ with Daisy 13.5 miles, stretched and did some core work afterwards
Lunch: Ran 6.5 miles EZ with Daisy and JP

Wednesday- AM:Swam One mile with Daisy

Lunch:Ran 3 miles at 4 hour pace on the treadmill, stretching afterwards

Thursday- AM: Ran 5 miles on the treadmill at 4 hour pace
Lunch: Last Hard Bodies Class as I am quitting my current (expensive) gym

Friday- Rest (B-day party in evening, and had to get out running club newsletters)

Saturday- Roads were icy so I opted for a haircut over a run, spent the rest of the day at a wedding and visiting friends in Parma, then off to the reception

Sunday- 12 miles at what was supposed to be 3:50 pace, even after easing off overall pace was around 8:25. Gotta back it off this week and get in the 8:46 zone! *First time running the Solon 12 after a long break where the "hill" did not feel hard, it's nice to know my fitness level is getting better even with the past month being mostly recovery! Could have easily kept going at this pace for the 15 or 20 route.

Bottomless Apple Pie

While I did not take a photo this time I will take the time out to describe my most recent baking endeavor for those that are lacking sweets in their life (See comments on previous post).

My last baking extravaganza was for Christmas with my loving mother watching over me. I successfully made an apple and pumpkin pie and declared myself a domestic diva. So when I had a few apples laying around and a friend over Sunday I decided it was time to try and recreate the baking magic sans mother.

Everything seemed to be in order, other than it taking a lot longer since I didn't have anyone to peel, core, and pare the apples for me. I was jamming out to Suzanne Vega and Tracy Chapman while bopping around the kitchen. Crust seemed to be just fine and I actually purchased a rolling pin this time around so there was no improvising. Got my bottom crust in and began the layering of apples, sugar, cinnamon, and butter. Was a little more scientific with the butter this time and kept it to a set amount before dotting. Rolled out my top crust, added a design for flair and popped that baby in the oven. About 55 minutes later the pie was golden and done so I set it out to cool while jamming out to Guitar Hero.

About an hour later my husband took a break from our gaming to go get everyone a slice of pie. I hear him calling "Honey?" "Yes Dear?" I reply (or something of that nature). "Did you put a crust on the bottom of this pie?"

I distinctly remember putting said bottom crust on pie but upon investigation it certainly looks like I hadn't. So we all had to be content to eat bottomless apple pie, which while not quite as tasty as my Christmas pie, was not a complete failure despite being bottomless. And I'd like to state for the record that the top crust was divine.

The next night I helped myself to a piece from the other half of the pie, which thankfully seemed to still have it's bottom. So chalk that up to a baking mystery I guess! Next time I will remember the photographic evidence.

Week in Review

Just a quick update before I get too far into this week! I'm working on the shoe review and race report I promise :)

Until then let's look at the last week in training. Tried to keep it relatively light with the 50k on the horizon and a large work load last week.

Monday-Rest

Tuesday- 3 mile treadmill run with impromptu fartlek (mile warm up, 3 minutes 7:03 pace, 1 minute 8:20 pace,2 minutes 6:40 pace, 1 minute 8:20 pace, 1 minute 6:15 pace, 1 minute 8:20 pace, 15 seconds, 6:00 pace, 15 seconds 5:56 pace, cool down)
Followed by an Easy 500 meter swim with Daisy

Wednesday- Easy 46 minute run

Thursday- AM Swim 1100 meters easy
Lunch Hard Bodies workout 60 minutes, no weights for any leg work, light weights for any upper body work

Friday- Easy 750 meter swim

Saturday- Winter Buckeye 50K

Sunday- Slept in, worked on running club stuff, baked a pie, and played Guitar Hero! Legs felt fine but decided to enjoy a day off

Winter Buckeye 50K Preview

Finished my fifth 50k yesterday in 5:53:30 (First 50k where I didn't take a spill!). Ran with Daisy and Solar most of the way and had a good time. Legs feel great and I am ready to "taper" for Tampa. Got the new shoes in the mail and I'm ready to break em in and get them ready for a 4 hour marathon :)

Note that this is where MT and I almost killed an old man during the summer 50k! Nobody out riding bikes in this weather!

Stopping for a photo at mile 13.

Race report and Shoe Review are on their way!

A (Phoenix) Week Review

Well I did okay for most of my vacation days on the exercise front but tapered off towards the end in favor of hot tub time, drinking time, reading time, niece time, and TV vegetation time. oh well.

Monday-35 minute run with my niece in her stroller
Tuesday- ~7.5 mile run on the Christensen trail. Saw two roadrunners and two hares (Huge Rabbits!) and thankfully saw no snakes. Ran at a good clip but I am not sure of total distance as I managed to get onto the wrong trail several times.
Wednesday- ~7.5 miles. Frustrating run about 2 miles along an extremely busy road to get to the Reach 11 Recreation area and find that the trail was closed for maintenance. I did a few out and backs and then headed home frustrated.
Thursday- ~4 mile hike in Sedona. Beautiful views as we hiked the trail to Devil's Bridge
Friday- One game of DDR and played two rounds of basketball at Dave and Busters (Has to count for something right?)
Saturday- Rest (flying home)
Sunday- Too damn cold to run so I did house chores instead

On a positive note I did ab workouts everyday I was in AZ and I did push ups a few of the days. Throw in a few rounds of "driving" my niece around the house and I managed not to gain too much weight from all the good Mexican food that was consumed.

Vacation Snapshots

It's good to be home, but man the weather in Ohio leaves a lot in to be desired after the nice sunny weather we had in Phoenix! Here's some photos to highlight the trip.
.
We had fun in the sun with our orange shades.

Even Bailey joined in!

Balancing on your head is a hoot.

The miracle of pedicures. Can you tell which toenail is a fake acrylic? Who knew you could just get a new toenail when you break yours on a long run!

Gotta fuel up for those desert runs.

Running with the roadrunners and hares.

Gotta Hydrate!

Cruising the dining room floors.

Making up for any lost runs. This kid loves to drive!

Crammed in to go get some sushi. It was well worth it.

Beautiful Sedona Views.

Everyone loves a bikini.

Chilling out enjoying the Sedona red rocks.

Week in Review and a Marathon Plan

Monday January 7th through Sunday the 13th

Monday- 1000 Meter Swim with Daisy, focus on kicking drills. 5.7 mile recovery run 8:33 pace
Tuesday-Spin class 60 minutes. 5.25 mile recovery run 8:47 pace
Wednesday- 1600 meter swim
Thursday- 4 mile EZ Run. 60 minute hard bodies class (Tons of lunges)
Friday- 4 mile EZ Run
Saturday- Rest (flew into Phoenix)
Sunday- 2.5 miles EZ

Finished reading the Pfitzinger book this morning and because of the 50k next week and Tampa Marathon two weeks later I've decided to go with the "10 weeks between marathons plan" for Boston and the "4 weeks between marathons plan" for Cleveland. I'd really like to do one of the official marathon plans but I want to make sure I am fully recovered from the 50k and Tampa marathons. I may be moved up in the pace line so I will want to be especially careful to be fully recovered if I end up pacing under 4 hours.

So my official plan starts February 11th. Until then I am going to use a few of the modified weeks from the 4 weeks between plan to try and be in good shape for Tampa. The Phoenix weather has allowed for some nice runs where I don't have to worry about any snow but it sounds like I will be heading back to some chilly weather at the end of the week which will definitely make following any plan a challenge, but I think I am up to the task!

Phoenix

We are heading west Saturday for a family visit in Phoenix. I cannot wait. I am way over due for a long break from the norm. It is a struggle to make it mentally through the day the past few weeks, thank goodness for morning and lunch workouts!

I should probably get in a long run while I am out there. Any Phoenix readers out there that have a recommendation for a good trail I can get 20+ miles in on? Probably a solo effort so safety is a must too. Debating pacing the FIL at the marathon Sunday to get in the miles, but I'd much rather get out on some desert trails!

May make a trip to Sedona, I've heard there are lots of great trails there. Anyone have any favorites?

Posting may be sporadic, I'll be busy spoiling my niece, relaxing, reading, formulating a training plan, and running on the trails. But hopefully I'll have some fun photos to post when I get back! Hope everyone is having a great week!

Week (s) in review

Okay so it seems that in the New Year bloggers are trying to give a little weekly summary, perhaps to keep themselves accountable, perhaps to track their mileage better, perhaps just because they are bored of writing and just want some content.

I'm going to jump on the wagon. Mostly because I think it is good for any readers and myself to have a neat little summary every week to see what I am (or am not) doing. I also liked doing the weekly reviews before Flying Pig last year. Also with 14 weeks to go til Boston I need to get my butt in gear and form a plan. As you will see the last few weeks are screaming "flying by the seat of my pants" and not focusing in on a training plan that is going to help me get faster, more efficient, and all around healthier this year. I'm about half way through "Advanced Marathoning" and hope to have figured out a plan for training by the end of next week.

Onto the summary (I'm including an extra few weeks to show the randomness that has been the last few weeks):

Monday (12/17/07): Rest
Tuesday: Rest
Wednesday: Swimming 1400 m
Thursday: Hard Bodies Class 60 Minutes
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Rest
Sunday: 8 mile run (trails)

Thursday: Hard Bodies, 60 minutes, lots of lunges, squats
Friday: "Recovery Run" 5.7 miles Pace 8:30 (Need to Slow Down!)
Saturday: 21 mile run (trails)
Sunday: 8 mile recovery run Pace 9:00
Monday: 13 mile run (hard tempo/hills) Pace 7:20, 1 mile cool down
Tuesday: Rest

Polar Plunge

Was Freezing! But I made the front page :) (okay only my little head made it into the background, but still!)

Glad MC didn't make it. Running in and out was quite enough this year, so no swim for me :)

I was fully spirited though with body marking, my floral bikini, shades, and a tropical wrap!

Predictable

Well I guess I am pretty predictable. I went out and ran my little legs off this morning. I managed to finish ahead of WV, unfortunately I was the only one to chick him today so he won the bet. Luckily for me I still scored breakfast out of it. But I had to pay up on the bet I lost (to run a 3:25 full this year) so it was a wash.

1:35:35 for 13 miles today. About 7:21 pace, a hair faster than my current half marathon PR pace. I'll count it as an unofficial PR :) Good way to end the year.

1757 miles this year, about 600 more than last year. Official 5K, 4 mile, 5 mile, 5.25 mile, 50k, and 50 mile PRs this year. Not too shabby.

Hope everyone has enjoyed reflecting on 2007 and is ready to jump into 2008 with vigor. I'll be literally jumping into 2008 by taking a dip in Lake Erie. If I take the plunge it will be my second annual polar plunge. As an added bonus at my new trim weight I will even look good in my bathing suit for this one!

Happy birthday to my hubby. He turns 33 today. Hopefully he will have a nice birthday this year. We're hanging out with friends tonight and having everyone over for games tomorrow. Should be a good time.

Happy New Year Everybody!

The guys in our running club have a tendency or running out of things to talk about on Sunday's at the bagel shop and once that happens it's time for the betting to begin. I've only been suckered into one bet which I lost. I'm not tempted to ever bet away a free meal again. But this is their way of keeping each other motivated to run well throughout the year.

Today is our New Years Eve Run. Approximately 13 miles. I had told Daisy we would be taking this run easy today since we both ran 21 and 22 miles respectively on Saturday. Well the bagel shop betters have another plan. They have made the bet that 3 women will beat WV back to the cars today. Then they realized that most of the fast women may not show. Leaving them to grab me and ask all about how fast I can run 13 miles. Of course not clarifying that they meant to propose that I beat WV today. So now the pressure is on, should I encourage this behavior and race my little legs to death today, or should I be smart and stick to my original plan of an easy day?

*Note that last night was girls night out and our three potentials for helping to win the bet all consumed copious amounts of appetizers, desserts, and red wine.*

So I may come back today with an unofficial 13 mile PR or I may come back having been smart and taken it easy and enjoyed a talkative run with my gals to end the 2007 season. Either way I bet I'll have had fun!

    Christmas with the Hansens

Paivi seeing if she likes pretzels. Girl went crazy the other night when we made tater tots, would not leave us or our plates alone.

Amenti pretending to be a glass of milk.

In retrospect this was a bad idea. In my defense I thought it looked so nice. Now I know though that my kitties just cannot resist windowsills and now I lost the glass frame on the left and all the glass panels in the frame in the middle. Got to love coming home to shards of glass everywhere.

Our mini tree and our collection of holiday photos. I started running out of room by Christmas but managed to get all the photos on there.

One of these socks doesn't quite fit in. Monte climbed in the sock basket as I was folding and made it all the way through the trip upstairs before finally bailing.

I was excited about this gift. We had a good photo of my sis at one of her Crew meets in Cleveland that I got blown up and framed for her.

Other gifts I was excited about giving this year included a family photo album for David's grandma with photos from the past 4-5 years, necklaces for both moms, a mug with a photo of me and the FIL after the Cleveland marathon, and disc golf equipment for David. I had a lot of fun giving the more personalized gifts this year, what can I say I am a photo hound and love sharing the photos as much as I do taking them! I have one more gift I am excited about giving but won't be giving it until mid January when we go to Phoenix.

My mom got us all "the claw" AKA window scrapers that keep our hands warm.

This cute puppy thinks he is a cat!

Mom and Dad got us a digital thermostat, with installation! Can't beat that!

We made out like bandits this year as usual. I got my Advanced Marathoning book from David, smart wool socks from my parents, a new watch, new kicks, two sweet new necklaces from my siblings, Scrubs season 5!, Lots of new long sleeved tops (thankfully both my mothers have good taste, as I do not, they hook up my wardrobe every year!), a deep fryer for David, and quite a few new games to add to our collection. Spoiled rotten. Hope you all were able to enjoy the season and were treated to some fun goodies. I am not big on the commercialization of Christmas but sometimes it is just plain fun to shower and be showered with goodies from your loved ones.

I'm off for my first 20+ miler in a while. My legs are still a wreck from Sore Bodies Thursday so this could be an interesting run!

    Holiday Pies

    My First Pies!

Realized after making the dough that we have no roller pin. Had to improvise!

My snowman didn't fit so I had to eat him

Finished product. They tasted great! Who knew baking was so easy?

Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas. We certainly did!

    5 Days Off

I have not run formally since Sunday. Decided it was about time I gave myself a break. Only workouts this week have been a 1400 meter swim and an hour of sore bodies class (and boy is my body sore!) I am glad I took the time off to recover but I am so ready to run again. Even if it is just a slog. My butt has been dragging by 4 PM every day this week. It is obvious that working out each day keeps my energy high and makes me a more productive person!

I asked for the Pfitzinger book for Christmas so hopefully by Tuesday I will come up with a plan for the year! So far it is looking like a lot of long events again. I've been asked to pace the 4 hour group in Tampa in February. I'm signed up for Winter Buckeye 50k and Boston, and I plan on racing Cinci again. I've got a half iron on tap in the fall, and I'm even thinking of travelling in December next year for a more arid 50 miler! No real rest for the crazy :)

Hope everyone has a great weekend! I know I will. Lots of family time and I will even squeeze in a trail run tomorrow morning!

    Reindeer Photos

A 5K in December? Oh My!

Haaaay Who's ready to run a 5k PR?

*Note that both of us in addition to Daisy, Salty, and JT ran 5k PRs!

*Edited to add links to the race reports in case you missed it! These were from December 1st. Obviously on this rest week I have a lot to talk about with the candy and old race photos popping up :)*

Thanks Daisy for the fun photos. Apparently sometimes I should be scaring myself. But all I know is I have a helluva lot of fun!

    Candy Making

Enough with all the training talk. Bring on the holiday Candy :)

    Making Turtles

No Bud Light was used in the candy chocolate. It was for turtle roller consumption only. We upgraded to Merlot for light painting.

Molds, and Buckeyes, and Turtles Oh My

Painting Lights (The lights are made in a mold and we use white chocolate for the tips and green or red chocolate for the lights, then we "paint" them with edible sparkles to make them shine) They look great and taste great too!

    No Lights

Well we got half way to Columbus before the snow storm hit. The roads were terrible but we made it down and had a nice lunch and chat with one of my dear friends from my younger life. Lights were out of the questions as by that time it was slushing. Thankfully the slushy ride back was better than the snowy one there. The run this morning in the rain will be interesting. And the drive home in 50 mph winds and snow should be even more interesting.

Run yesterday went great. Legs are feeling peppier. Still think I will bag the 20 this morning and go for a more reasonable 12-17 though.

The things we do in the name of endurance, fitness, craziness...

    Worn Down

But no worries I'll bounce back. My energy levels are fine but my last 3 workouts my legs have been ticked off. Just that zapped feeling. I can't figure out if it is because I pushed too hard on my Wednesday swim or if three workouts was one too many Wednesday and the good nights sleep Wednesday night was not enough to recover for a spin class and hard bodies the next day.

Today I just have an easy 4 miles so hopefully I will be fully recovered and ready to roll Sunday for 20. But if not I am not worrying about it. I'll just half the run. I think I'll be fine in time for the winter Buckeye 50k whether I hit that 20 this weekend or not. Hell last year I think my longest run was 13 between JFK and the 50k.

The crazy VTC competition has had me swimming laps, running circles, and even getting on the dreaded trainer and spin bikes. Spin class kicked my a$$ yesterday. I have some serious bike work to do guys. It was ugly! On a positive note my arms and legs are getting more tone and I can now easily do some of my strength exercises with heavier (for me) weights. I'm getting excited! 2008 will be the year of no arm flab and a six pack :)

This week was actually a back off from last week and here's what I've done:

    Monday- Rest
Tuesday- Run 5.5 miles 8:15 pace
Wednesday- Easy morning run 4 miles, swim 1600 meters, Easy 5 miles, had to back off the pace because of dead legs ~9 min miles
Thursday- Spin Class 50 minutes, Hard Bodies Class (60 minutes) Stairs and Suicide drills about killed my legs

    Planned
    Friday- 4 easy miles
    Saturday- 10 miles trail
    Sunday- 20 miles trail

    Last week was just nuts:
    Monday- Swim 1600 meters
Tuesday- Run 2.5 miles treadmill, swim 1100 meters
Wednesday- Swim 1600 meters, run 5 miles ~9 min pace
Thursday- Swim 1400 meters, Hard Bodies (60 minutes)
Friday- Run 4 miles easy, Pilates/Yoga Class (60 minutes)
    Saturday- 10 miles trails
    Sunday- 18 miles trails

I guess the run mileage is a good sign, I'm hitting 40+ without even trying to. Don't really need the miles right now but it will be good to know that my new slightly higher base plans are achievable.

Going to see I am Legend tonight with Daisy and her man. Should be fun!

    Have a great weekend!

    Busy Busy Busy

Looking back at this month a year ago I was a bit depressed and just generally down. I think that's one of the major reasons I love having a blog. I was looking to see if my SIL helped with our annual holiday candy making day last year and while finding that I also found details about how post JFK I was just generally down last year. Recovery took forever and the winter had me singing the blues.

What a difference a year makes! I am in such a better place this year than last year. Mentally and physically. My recovery is going swimmingly. I've hit 40 miles the past two weeks with no issue and even added in a lot of swimming, one bike session, strength training, and yoga/Pilate's! My outlook has been great. I've just generally been excited to face each day and have been riding a high since JFK and Reindeer Run.

Candy making day went great. We started late again but we still finished by 10 PM even though this year we had to add in Christmas to the mix since my SIL and her fiancee would not be able to get back up to Cleveland on the official date. Since we celebrated so early I have most of my shopping already done. Two gifts arrived today which I need to wrap and then I just have one gift left to purchase and one gift left to make. I think I can handle that :) We sent out over 90 holiday letters this year, I still have a few I'd like to send but addresses are MIA so I may have to settle for being done on that front. Already passed out 7 boxes of candy. Only 15 left. This one may be tricky as some of our friends are not on my regular weekly "route" but there's still plenty of time.

Work has been nuts. I have been working my butt off, hopefully it will pay off and the clients will be pleased. We will see.

I'm trying to get a new website started for my running club as well as get all the addresses in order to send out banquet invites and requests for runner of the year votes. This task may take me a bit more time than I would like it to.

Meanwhile I am trying to keep my mileage up to compete in our tri clubs virtual tri competition and the USAT virtual competition. I'm slacking on the bike, and realized yesterday I need to take it easy as this month really should be a recovery month. That competitive girl within is so hard to shut down sometimes though!

This weekend I am looking forward to getting down to Columbus to see some buddies and going out to see the holiday lights at the zoo. I can't wait! It's so nice to have a weekend day to just relax :) Don't worry though I'll follow it up with a 20 miler on Sunday ;)

I lost my contact on N. Marginal

Got out tonight for a windy frostbitten run with my pal B. It was a bit windier than I like but we made it through a comfortable 45 minutes in it. I had a bit of trouble with the wind on the way back and eventually lost a contact to it. At first it shifted, then it froze, then it fell out. Thankfully it was my right which I have a spare of :) I'm running low on contacts, hopefully I have an eye check up soon!

Workouts have been going well. I felt the starts of something sickish yesterday with a sore throat and sinus drainage but I feel better today so hopefully I can keep on trucking. I've been focusing more on cross training with the CTC Virtual Tri competition going on, but still trying to keep my run base up to stay in shape for the Winter Buckeye 50K, managed to hit 40 miles last week without really trying. I've swam 3 days in a row this week and plan on making tomorrow a 4th so that has been good, although my skin is not as happy about it. I got on the trainer once. Hopefully my ladies will have a group trainer gig to get my butt back on the bike again. It's so much easier to run! :)

I'm super busy at work right now and trying to get some stuff together for my running club, as well as get holiday letters written and sent, and gifts bought and wrapped. Time's a bit tight but my workouts are keeping me sane! I have plans underway for 2008. Major thoughts are on the CTC Beast series, Boston, and another spring marathon. Hopefully I'll get a plan lined up soon! Right now I am flying by the seat of my pants and that is okay by me.

Hope everyone is having a great Wednesday!

    A VR Plug

After spending over 3 hours, going through two separate malls, spending 30 minutes at Dicks to find out how much the last pair of (ladies) mittens in the entire store cost, and finding they only carried youth mittens at Marc's I had pretty much given up all hope on finding my father in law a pair of mittens to use while running for his Birthday. Apparently mittens are not fashionable right now. I was resolved to getting a gift card to one of the local running shops when thankfully my buddy SH from the local running store Vertical Runner was at our Sunday morning run and informed me that yes their store did indeed carry men's mittens. A 30 minute drive later and I left with a pair of extremely nice men's mittens. Dad loves them, unfortunately I bought the wrong size. But hey it's the effort and thought that count right?

Thanks Vertical Runner for rescuing the day! ;)

It was on this trip that I was offered Free Roasted Chestnuts. Thank goodness I waited until I was in my car before biting into one as I promptly spit it back in the cup. I tried really hard to chew it all up but uggh, the taste and texture did not agree with me!

    10%

So I have been doing a lot of thinking about being pretty consistently top 10% of females every race I do. Doesn't seem to matter the distance or even event, tris, ultras, marathons, 5ks you can pretty much bet on me being top 10% exactly in women. I've decided that enough is enough I want to break into the top 10%, enough of being exactly 10!

So with that in mind and a good fartlek workout on Wednesday I signed up for the Reindeer Run 5k in Lakewood this morning. I had no idea what pace I ran on Wednesday but I figured it was decent and if the weather played along I'd give it one more go to achieve sub 20.

Salty picked me up this morning and I was nervous but I felt good. My left hamstring is a bit sore and my quad was a bit out of sorts but considering I ran a 50 mile race two weeks ago I felt pretty good. Got in a good 30 minute warm up with Daisy and Salty and threw in some strides to remind my legs what fast feels like.

It was cold this morning but the sun was shining and there was hardly any wind. I'd been told this was a fast out and back course, no hairpin turns. If I was going to break 20 this was the day to do it. Lined up with Daisy and JP. I wanted to cling to JP as long as possible as she has been consistently running 19:50s this year. Unfortunately she told me beforehand her goal was to cling to Salty who was going for something under 19. Yikes. So I decided I'd just go out and see what happened.

The bell went off and we made our way around a slight curve before the crowd thinned down. JP didn't seem to be too close to Salty so I decided to just stick with her, she is a smart racer and if I could keep on her for 2 miles I'd have a shot at sub 20. I felt pretty good. Breathing was good, none of the residual exhaustion from JFK which I had Wednesday in the later Fartleks. I had Daisy right with me but there was no talking this morning. In a 5k there isn't much room for error.

The first mile seemed to take forever but I just kept my eyes on JP and tried to literally follow her footsteps, keeping my foot strikes in line with hers. No looking at the watch except at the mile markers today. I tried to tune out time and just run strong. First mile 6:14. Sweet. I was happy and wasn't worried that it was about 12 seconds faster than the overall pace I wanted. I knew if I just held onto JP my pace wouldn't falter.

The second mile brings your around the only turn and the sun made it a bit hard to see. The roads were a bit messy here but we navigated it fine. JP and I went back and forth with a gal I knew from Tri swimming here. I just stuck to JP like glue knowing I needed to keep with her through 2 to have a shot at sub 20. Mile 2 6:23.

I did the math and knew that meant I could run a 6:40 my last mile and still go sub 20. That made me extremely happy. The pace still felt good. I had to step it up a notch to hold onto JP. I let her pull a bit ahead but anytime the gap opened up I pulled myself forward to close it. We could still see Salty in the distance so I knew we were doing well. I kept telling myself that 6:40 was very doable. The pace started to feel difficult but I knew I could hold on for one mile. I didn't feel beat and knew I just had to keep my head together. I figured I had slowed down a little bit because the pace felt harder. I assumed the lactic acid was starting to take it's toll.

I was shocked when we came to a man shouting out the 3 mile split and my mile was 6:07. Holy crap I thought. Just hold on and you've done it. It seemed like a long .1 miles and I knew since there was no actual 3 mile marker that I needed to keep pushing in case mile 3 was actually farther ahead. I didn't have much of a kick but I held my pace and tried my best to push a bit harder. I looked up at the clock and saw 19 and what I thought was a 5 and pushed it over the line hoping I had made it. I looked down at my watch 19:28. Holy crap! Ecstatic I gave out a holler.

10 years later and I finally got that 20:03 monkey off my back. It feels damn good. I have no idea if I was in the top 10% but I am so pleased with the day. Official time was 19:23. 5th overall, 1st in age (by 2 seconds!). I had no idea my swim pal was so close. All my gals pr'ed or had exceptional days including age group or overall awards for Salty, JP, Daisy, and JT! It feels so good to go out on a bang like this for the year. PRing in distances from 5K to 50 Miles. Now I just need to take down that half and full marathon next year!

I am so glad Salty convinced me to go out to this race. Thanks girl!
