Taper Signs

There's a few random things that inevitably run through my mind during taper which signal to me that I am ready to race.

1) I realize how absolutely grateful I am for my wonderful support team I have and I wonder at the fortune I have had to be able to get to the start line in the best shape possible unhindered.

2) I randomly want to start doing pushups and core work race week. The extra down time has me realizing running has made me soft. And I must seriously resist the temptation to remedy this with a killer workout!

3) Time slows down to a crawl. If I am not race ready I find myself wishing for a few more weeks, but when I am feeling fit and mentally sharp it takes everything I have to make it through the work week pre race!

4) I start planning the next big race adventure with my extra free time. When I'm nervous and not ready all I can do is hash out and rehash out my race plan. When I find myself ready to roll I start using that extra mental time to dream up my next goal. (Note this usually has the added plus of helping to avoid post race blues)

So I guess this is my little post to say, for the first time in a long time I find myself in taper crazy mode :) It's good to be back!

Last "Workout" Before Philly

Headed back to the track last night to do my typical pre marathon workout. 2 miles around marathon pace followed up by 4*200s. Like I said previously if I was a betting woman I would put my money on around 6:29 to 6:33 pace on Sunday, but since one of the gals needed to do her first mile at 6:15 and my best case marathon plan would be 6:19s I just went with it to get in two miles around 6:16. By the time we started it was already pitch black out but we cruised through the first mile pretty effortlessly (admittedly not marathon effortlessly) in 6:11 and I did the next one right on in 6:16. Not going to lie it did not feel like marathon effort so I will most likely adhere to my conservative first half effort based plan on Sunday. Followed it up with an easy lap then 4 laps of jog 200 run 200 and didn't take splits because I didn't want to know ;) Foot felt the best it has in awhile on a "speed" day. Calf was a little tight after so I will be sure to have my massage therapist focus on loosening up the calves tomorrow and work in some epsom salt baths the next few days to stay loose!

This week could not get over with fast enough! It is dragging by, so I am taking that as a good sign that I am mentally ready to get this show on the road!

1 week to Philly Rundown!

My foot was a bit angry after the half last weekend and I wanted to make sure I was recharging while getting in a few more quality days this week, so I was targeting 50-60 miles with a short but faster tempo and hill repeats. Wanted to recharge but keep "sharp." I got in 53 miles but was feeling pretty rundown by the weekend.

I have actually felt really good energy wise on almost every run since a week after the Akron relay so I wasn't ecstatic that I felt pretty run down Saturday and Sunday despite taking Monday and Friday off running this week. I think I can safely blame it on a socially packed Friday which ended with a few hours of dancing and a restless night's sleep, but trust me I am sucking down airborne, OJ, and chicken noodle soup just in case as I know too many people with colds right now! I took a nap Saturday and Sunday and went to bed early Sunday to get in an extra dose of sleep. Feeling human again today! Taking today off and keeping with my typical pre marathon week to try and be at the start line 100% Sunday morning! I had ART twice last week and one last time this morning and the foot is as good as it is going to be without some time off (which I have promised I will take post Philly, and the doc is hopeful once I give it a week or two off it will actually fully heal!) I've got clearance from the doc to run the life out of myself at Philly as he doesn't think I am doing any damage to the foot, just preventing it from healing completely until I rest it.

So I ended up with 2 days off running and 6 runs (one double) totaling 53 miles. One swim and one yoga class. No bike.

In addition to my training I have started doing 3 small 30 minute workouts with David each week in the hopes of getting him onto the fitness bandwagon, starting small with the couch to 5k plan and we'll see from there! 2 weeks down and so far so good! (Meaning he hasn't fired his coach/spouse from the job yet! And he isn't injured or overly run down.)

Still tossing around time goals for Sunday. If I was a betting woman and I took a look at my past 8 weeks training I think I'd bet on 2:52-2:53. But you know me, I'm most likely going for better! I'd be happy if I could get under 2:52, but I am hopeful some race day magic will have me closer to sub 2:50 and possibly a PR. I've looked at the races profile and talked to a few of my friends who have run it and I am heavily leaning towards ignoring the watch through the half (other than to ensure I am not going out too fast the first 5k), going by effort, and then seeing where I am at at 13.1 and deciding on how ballsy I want to be the back half. The profile looks rolling through about 13.5 then it seems to flatten out, so I am hopeful if I run smart I could try for a negative or even split. Simple math tells you 2:46 is likely off the plate. A 1:23:29 half last weekend doesn't bode well for going sub 1:23 for two halfs in a row. I'm bummed I can't make a serious go at the B standard, but I'm excited that in 5 short weeks I have gone from someone who was pretty confident she couldn't go under 3:03 with a serious effort to someone who is looking to try and legitimately snag a sub 2:52!

Phew!

Starting to feel like myself again! Managed two miles at the track last night around marathon pace and felt pretty good (6:10 and 6:15). Followed that up with 4*200 at 39, 38, 38, and 37 and other than some hacking and a slight runny nose felt pretty good. Funny how ones body can go through the gamut of paces in such a short time period. From flying on Thursday, to drudging on Sunday, to solid on Tuesday. My legs are definitely probably feeling bi-polar right now.

Still clinging onto a bit of gunk this morning on my shake out run, but energy levels are close to 100 and this is a hack I can deal with as it is clearly on its way out!

Went in for my last A.R.T. session. My right leg has had no issues in a few weeks, but my left hammy just won't seem to let go of that last bit of tightness. Well we'll see tomorrow, but I have a really good feeling that we got it worked out this morning. He worked on the sciatic nerve which apparently had attached itself to my hammy a bit, which is why it wouldn't let go of that last little bit of tension.

And even more fabulous news. Joan Benoit Samuelsen is running in the womens elite start at Boston! AAANNND likely going for the OTQ. As if this whole thing wasn't already exciting enough. Fingers crossed that she does intend to go for the OTQ and that she plans to run an even effort race, cuz if so I sense I am going to be running with a great group on Monday :)

Words of Wisdom: "With one week to go before Marathon Monday the challenging aspects of training shift from the physical to the mental. Anyone who has run a marathon knows how long (mentally) that last week can be. All the physical training is done. The only physical benefits to be gained come from resting and eating well over the next week. Crushing last minute workouts have no place in these final days. However, there is still time to prepare the heart. A heart that is free from all worries, completely trusting in your abilities.

...

So often there is the temptation to over think race strategy. We want to have an exact race plan that will be carried out exactly how we have visualized it. It's not that planning is bad, one should be prepared for whatever lies ahead, however there comes a point where we are over analyzing and putting more confidence in having to execute the perfect race strategy then trusting in our ability to respond to whatever is thrown our way. Freedom, in terms of a free-flowing race strategy, can be scary. It's scary because we have to let go of control. However, the benefits of freedom are great. It allows flexibility, an open mind, an open vision, an open heart to whatever the day may hold. It gives us the opportunity to receive the moment to the fullest whether or not it is the perfect race day or pouring rain. I encourage you to let go and run free and run like you can't fail!"

1 week to go

Everything feels great. I'm mostly packed. Now I just have to balance the excitement with that last week of downers that comes along while trying not to be overly excited :) Now is not the time to lose focus for sure, but don't want to think about the race too much and drive myself crazy :) Work will be busy this week so that should help keep my mind off things.

Weekly Rundown:

50 miles
Monday-7.4 at 8:20 pace
Tuesday-7.9 at 7:27 pace with track
Wednesday-4.1 at 8:35 pace
Thursday-8 miles at 6:57 with tempo
Friday-7.9 miles at 7:33 pace
Saturday-3 miles 8:08 pace with 4*20 second strides
Sunday-12 miles 7:09 pace

Key Workouts:

Track: 3*800 with 2 minute rests, 4*400 with 80 second rests, 4*200, jog 200, 1600
goals were 2:53 for the 800s, 1:24 for the 400s, and 5:52 for the 1600. It was hot, windy, and I was running late. So I am happy with the night. The last 800 of the mile was rough.

Tempo: Goal 5 miles at 6:26 pace. Stomach disaster before this run so I was just happy to make it through it. It didn't feel as comfortably hard as usual, but given how sick I felt beforehand I'll take it.

Long Run: Just an easy conversational 12 miler. These runs are so fun. Hopefully at Boston once I shut my trap 20 seconds faster per mile will also feel breezy, at least for the first 16 ;)

Taper

For many a marathoner the bane of their existence. I know personally the things that drive me to train for a marathon make taper time a rough time, especially now as my training has really gotten to a level worthy of racing the marathon. I tend to thrive on progress, I like seeing the mileage go up week after week, and the pace getting quicker. I live my weekly life not day to day, but rather hard workout to hard workout. The weeks seem to have flown by, but day to day seems to drag, it feels like last weeks tempo run was weeks ago, but tomorrow it will feel like it should already be time for a long run. So during taper when mileage is backing off and the goal is really to maintain and recover it is hard to control the OCD side of my marathoner brain.

I have successfully pushed and molded my body for this marathon and now I must spend 3 weeks trusting that the work has been done and that I will magically line up the right amount of rest and quality training over taper to show up race day primed for my best effort. I'm putting my faith in my coach and trusting that things will work out.

This taper varies from any other I have had before because this time around there is no doubt in my mind that I have done everything right to train for this marathon. Now I just have to trust that I won't screw it up during taper :) I physically feel fitter and faster than I ever have before and not only that I feel like this training block really primed me specifically for the marathon. I cannot express how fantastic my legs have felt the past 5-6 weeks. I am not used to this fresh zippy feeling while working so hard and it definitely has me excited for Boston.

I am very much looking forward to the next two weeks flying by and getting on the plane to Boston!

Taper Madness and Race Wardrobe

So for those that are curious I did have somewhat of a method to my taper this year. Last year I really didn't as I hadn't had a single week over 50 miles due to ITB problems.

I don't know where I picked up this little principle from but this is what I went with this year. Three weeks out I had my highest week of the training block. I hit 60+ miles and did my longest long run of the season (60k-40 miles). Two weeks out I was supposed to aim for 80% of my highest week but bailed on an easy 5 miler and was a little bit short. I did my last long run which was 19.5 miles (about half of my longest long run). 1 week out I did 50% of my highest week at 30 miles with my longest run at 10 miles (half the previous weeks long run) (are you seeing the trend?). And now we are at race week and I am aiming for the whole week to be 60 or less, which equals not a whole heck of a lot during the week :) Hence the taper madness!

I need to pack tonight. I will try my best not to pack my entire running wardrobe this time around. Although it is tempting we all know that when it comes down to it there really are only so many options you actually need come race day. My packing list last year was extensive. This year I am going to try and be a bit more minimalistic about it. JFK is a very well supported run and Rootsrunner will be out crewing for some friends so I am sure any issues that arise will be taken care of and I don't actually need to carry around a pharmacy in my waist pouch. And though I am tempted to take a camera this time around I am going to nix it as I know that would be the factor that would seal the deal on me falling on the AT and busting the thing. I just need to decide if I can get by with the pockets in my handheld, shorts or Capri's, and a lightweight jacket or if I still need the waist pouch. I am tempted to leave the pouch at home as I know it will make my lower backs life a lot easier. But maybe I will just throw it in my "crew" bag in case of emergency.

Since I'll have shades I am leaning towards no hat. But I still could decide to do a visor or cap. I'll have to see how the short hair looks in my Wild Bill cap tonight. I don't want people to mistake me for being Wild Bill if you know what I mean.

Temperatures are looking to be 32-47 and a bit cloudy, which means layers.

I don't really know what I want to wear this year. Last year I had my awesome pink Wild Bill shirt. But that shirt has certainly seen better days and while I like my blue Wild Bill shirt I don't think blue is the color I want to wear at JFK. I want to look peppy as well as be peppy! I know I will be wearing my orange New York shades that Tony picked up for me so I want to make sure they look good with whatever I choose.

I am leaning towards my Nike Capri's for bottoms but will pack my pearl izumi shorts as a back up. The main worry with the Capri's is they do not have a liner and since all my shorts do I am not sure which pair of ladies garments I should opt to wear for minimal leg chafing. I'm drawn to the Capri's though as they will protect my leg skin from the wind and on the off chance that I do bite it on the AT they might protect me from permanent scars, plus I survived my last 20 mile run in them with no issues and they look good!

As for my jacket I'd like to wear the Nike jacket I got in San Fran but as it only has one pocket so I am not sure it will work. It does look good though and I think the weight would be perfect. I've got a back up in the jacket I wore last year, but again it is blue...I could always do a long sleeve instead of a jacket and wear my pink Nike top, but then I lose precious pocket space.

I'll have to think about the short sleeved top. It will be too cold for my cute tank so I need to decide between a few of my hardcore ultra tops or my few fashionable tops. Hardcore ultra tops give you something to talk about on the trail. But fashionable gets more cheers from the few crowds. Decisions decisions.

The one thing I do have decided is shoes. I'll wear my Mizuno Ascends on the trail and change into my Mizuno Wave Riders for the towpath and roads. This worked well for me last year and hopefully everything will go just as smoothly with the switch as it did last year too.

13 hours until my next run. I can't wait!

Taper Mood and other Randomness

I swear I am usually a pretty chipper person, but I am admittedly a passive aggressor and a bit over emotional sometimes (okay a lot of the time). Add taper into that and you get a downright cranky lady! And I've only had one day off from running, aack!

There's been a few kinks in the JFK plans and I am not being rational about it at all. I need to just get over it and move on but I swear taper is making me a psycho!

I am looking very much forward to the good adrenaline vibe and hopefully some good mood endorphins that will come from tonight's brief run and my only other run on Thursday. In the meantime try to be nice to me so I don't bite your head off ;)

If you are a runner and have not seen Runner Susan's recent organization effort you need to go check it out. I am so jealous.

JFK goals are floating around in my head. A lot depends on MT and whether or not we try to stay together. I'm leaning towards sub 9 though which may mean I need to break out on my own at some point if MT isn't feeling it. I'd like to do each section of the course a bit faster than last year and as long as I don't fall on the AT I am confident that I am in shape for it. It would be nice to blaze through the 50 and add another PR to the years tally. With no recent marathon race effort I have no idea what a realistic time goal should be. I feel confident I could run a 3:30 right now which is why I arbitrarily picked sub 9. Marathon*2 plus 2 hours is what they say for JFK and it was spot on for me last year. I guess I will have to privately consider what I think my best marathon effort would be right now to speculate on a best case scenario "A" goal for the 50. I'd rather exceed goal than fall short though so 9 will probably remain the realistic A goal. Indecision at its best. None of this speculation really matters on such a long day, I just need to listen to my body and have fun, but it would be nice to have an idea in mind to compare to throughout the day.

On that note I need to go run!

Dishes Are Not Fun

Slaving away during taper seems uncalled for!

taper madness

I swear taper is some kind of disease! I am going through lapses of extreme tiredness to bottled up energy feel like I am going to explode if I don't run this marathon right now.

Uggh. 12 more days until I get my sanity back.

Cut my track workout short last night. The first 3*1k went great right on or ahead of pace but the 4th was lacking and I figured better to cut out 1k than to explode on the 5th. I think I made the right decision as during the cool down my legs just felt like they were tapped. Probably should have brought some gatorade or fuel as I was definitely not fully recovered from Sunday. One more track workout to go next Tuesday!
