Getting Funky with my bad self

Time for a change

I am working on changing the blog "face." I am still going to fudge with the backgrounds etc. but for now this will do. I felt like I needed a change.

Signed up for Boston today. So I am going and will just have to find a cheap place to stay etc.

I think B, J, and A are going so hopefully I will have some company!

Tonight was girls night out for all the October b-day girls. I got a very good smelling candle, lotion, and an adidas backpack! Suhweet. I am feeling very spoiled.

I also got two pairs of Boston 05 technical shorts and a technical T that S got on sale, $15 for all three total, the shorts were originally $32 they were on sale for $3.00!!! Can't beat that, they are nice and even have a "butt pocket"!

No running today but I did eat quite a lot at dinner ;)

A and I are thinking about driving to Niagara Sunday morning for the marathon. All the girls are running it so it would be fun to run with them and get some good photos!

If the weather holds I am going to get back on the bike on Saturday.

I need to workout a training "plan" for the next few months before official Boston training starts...

Zombie Girl

Yesterday the legs still weren't functioning quite normal. Especially after long periods sitting at the desk. I looked somewhat like a zombie and moved just as slow.

I decided to go to the Tuesday night run despite my condition hoping running would make my legs feel better. Luckily despite my condition I was able to run around 9 minute miles so I was able to keep up with Su. We ran about 5.5 miles in 50 minutes. My legs started to actually feel normal walking after that, but after sitting at dinner at Hoggy's for the evening they were back to stiff and zombieish.

They are feeling much better tonight. I took a break from athletics today.

I am feeling a bit off today. Post marathon depression again? I have so much to be happy about right now so that is all I can figure. I guess at least I was able to enjoy the race and the aftermath this time around. After Richmond I was not happy at all. My levels must have been all over the place.

Hopefully a good nights sleep will help!

I think I also need to set some of my race goals for the next year in stone.

For sure I want to run Boston, not sure if that will happen because of funds but I will keep my fingers crossed.

After that Buckeye 50K is definitely an option. All my friends are doing the Jamba Juice Half Ironman in California so I guess I am probably jealous, so I should see about a local half ironman.

I got some CDs and a book from the library on the way home tonight. I usually just pick a book off the new rack that looks interesting.

Right now I am reading Why we Buy: The Science of Shopping by Paco Underhill and The Case For Christ by Lee Strobel. B recommended the latter and I think the book I found tonight is what I am going to have him read (if I enjoy it) How to read the Bible by Steven L. McKenzie. It sounds interesting at least from my semi agnostic point of view.

Why we Buy is pretty good, I think I heard about it over on Chicalookate's blog at some point. As somewhat of an impulse purchaser it is definitely an interesting read.

Okay enough with the randomness. I am obviously overdue for a good night's sleep.

Good For a Laugh

I just received this (slightly edited to protect identities) in an email from a coworker:

"I am writing to inform everyone that today is my last day. I've just purchased the winning Powerball lottery tickets (worth $340 million dollars), and after tonight, I feel that it will be time to move on. Please, do not cry, I know this is hard for everyone (well... almost everyone...). Next time I'm in town, maybe I'll buy everyone a cup of coffee, my treat. I'll even let you get one of those expensive latte drinks with the sprinkles on top."

I'm It

I got tagged by Buckeyerunner, wow someone tagged me? :)

Here are the rules:
1. Go into your archives.
2. Find your 23rd post.
3. Find the fifth sentence (or the closest one to it)
4. Post the text of your sentence in your blog along with these rules.
5. Tag five other people.

So I post a lot of pics (which are technically individual posts, and my 23rd post was just a pic) so I went for the 23rd date I posted.

"Once in I am fine of course but taking the plunge is rough, especially at 6am in the morning!"

In reference to a cold morning swim. Fitting I think since Buckeyerunner is a swimmer!

I will tag some runners and non runners alike:

The Columbus Marathon

For now I am just going to post about the race, I am still pretty beat and the weekend was much to amazing to sum up over the next 30 minutes or so. I wish I could write half as well as some of those that had their race reports last weekend. I love to write here but it always ends up being more of a personal journal entry than a fascinating recount :)

I am feeling pretty beat up, went out and "ran" for 20 minutes tonight to help get my legs moving again but as soon as I got back and sat down my legs went back into robot mode. Every step seems like a major feat. I don't know how the heck B ran 6 miles two weeks ago the day after his marathon. I probably ran like a mile tonight and it was miserable. I was excited that it started to feel like actual running after 10 minutes though. I may try to go out tomorrow morning and try again.

Yesterday morning I actually woke up before the alarm! Impressive! Hubby and I got down to the lobby and met up with the rest of the team a little bit more than an hour before the race. We took some team photos, made a few bathroom trips and then headed to the start line. My parents, David, Katie, B, and B2 were all with on the walk over. It was chilly so shivering kept my mind off the task I was about to undertake.

At the start I lined up between the 3:20 and 3:30 pace groups. A and J were there too. We were all trying to qualify for Boston, but we all have different running styles so the start was the last time we saw each other until the finish. I found a guy that wanted to run around 3:25 and he decided to keep me company. A plane flew over the start and the count down began.

The first mile was a bit slow but I had been forewarned at the expo that the first mile was slightly uphill and you would make up that time in the second mile. That turned out to be true and for the next 11 miles I enjoyed fast splits, beautiful scenery, and a running partner.

We started to see walkers relatively early in the race. I passed coach Mel and gave a holler. It was a nice boost seeing members of our team :) B met up with me around mile 6 and ran with me for a mile or so, gave me some encouragement and headed out to meet with B2 around 13. I saw my honoree Kristin around mile 10, she was walking the half marathon with her mom. That was a big upper. My family was waiting for me just after 10. All the people in the first half combined with the flat and pretty course made that part fly by.

Around 12 I had to make a pit stop. It was really aggravating, I had waited for a stop with no line and finally found it but the people in there were taking FOREVER! (One of these days I will make it through a marathon without a bathroom stop!) I drank some water and took a gel, but still was just standing there for at least 30 seconds. I never did catch back up to the guy I was running with so I spent the majority of the second half of the race on my own.

The pace I was running seemed to be my own. I never did find anyone that was holding steady pace for the rest of the race. I saw my family again at the half way point and started to make my way up the first "hills" on high street. It was windy and I couldn't find anyone to tuck in behind. I was told that Columbus was flat as a pancake, but let me tell you, when you are running under 8 minute pace even the slightest incline feels like a HILL! I kept good pace 15 through 17 and felt pretty good despite the slight incline and wind. 17-19 was rough but I was still on pace for 3:25. I started to feel something sticky in my shoe and realized I was probably bleeding. It didn't hurt so I tried not to worry about it.

B caught me around 19 and ran a mile with me. At this point I wasn't feeling great. I wasn't in pain but my legs were definitely struggling to keep pace and it still felt like I was going UPHILL! B kept stride with me and said I had some more uphill to tackle but it would be downhill soon. He grabbed my hand and I tried to steal some of his energy :) then he sent me on my way. I started counting down time and miles. My head was on straight and I knew what I had to do, but my legs determined in the end how I was going to finish.

I fell off pace from 22 through the end, my legs couldn't have gone a second faster. They weren't sore, they were just drained of all energy. I saw KT a little after 24 and I know I looked bad. She ran along behind me but I didn't even realize it :) All the volunteers and spectators were cheering for me, telling me I looked great. I sure didn't feel like I looked great. David said he could tell I was in pain when he saw me around 25. There was some good tunes at that water stop and I thought I might get a surge from that but it just wasn't there. I finally came around the turn and saw the finish line. There was finally a downhill but at this point that was just painful. I heard B2 cheering for me and that definitely made me happy knowing he was done and feeling good enough to cheer me on. I managed to smile as I crossed the finish line, and I was very happy to be done.

I felt very good about my race. I broke 3:30 which was what my original goal was. So I am very pleased. I got my Mylar blanket and medal and took almost all the food and drink that were offered to me. I made it to the TNT tent and got my 26.2 pin! WooHoo, now I just have to do a century ride and I will have my triple crown!

B2 and I conned our families into walking around with us as we searched for the massage tent. I haven't got the massages before but I decided that I earned it :) I was expecting a soft massage but they dug in pretty deep, yikes! They also stretched out everything which was really nice. I headed back to the hotel with David and finally took off my shoes. The pic below is what I found :) My feet looked pretty bad. I called a few friends and managed to get into a cold bath. It was brutal at first but I survived.

My legs felt really good yesterday considering, I even managed to dance at the victory party! In retrospect that may have been a bad idea because my legs hurt pretty bad today!

I am sure I will be recovered by the weekend and the plan is to run a kick-butt 10k on Thanksgiving in Detroit. Other than that I think the next major race will be Boston.

Well I am extremely tired. I will try to post more about the weekend and my birthday later!

Congrats to everyone that raced this weekend!

Preparing the Mind

So I have done all I can to get these legs of mine ready but I wanted to do some more mental prep.

I checked out the Columbus site and took a look at their course map.

I wanted to know how feasible it was for my family to get to different locations on the course so I created a Google Map of the course. It actually turned into a good exercise because it forced me to go turn by turn through the whole course in my mind. Gotta love all these great google tools!

I am getting super nervous but pretty much everything is ready to go. We are mostly packed. I have a project I want to do before leaving but I can always tackle that tomorrow if it doesn't get done tonight. Tonight we are doing my B-day dinner at an Italian restaurant downtown. Big thanks to K for the gift certificates!!! I will be 24 tomorrow! :) Not a big year other than it will be my last in my current age group category :) The women are going to start to get fierce once I hit 30!

Happy B-Day to Eostre! She shares my wonderful birthday tomorrow!

Thank you to everyone that sent me well wishes for the marathon and birthday wishes! I really appreciate it and I definitely feel loved! (Thanks Su for taking care of my furry ones this weekend!)

This will probably be my last post before Monday when I get home to my internet! Feel free to check results at the Columbus Marathon website! I am sure they will have instructions on how to do so race day. I am hoping to be finished at 11:25 AM!

Goals

Got out this morning for an easy 30 minute run (http://tinyurl.com/9gqfs). Took my mp3 player with and I definitely think I will be setting up a playlist to pump me up Sunday morning before the race. I am still a running purist when it comes to race day. It's just me and the race baby! But a little music beforehand will be a great way to set the mood.

We had a TNT info meeting tonight that went well. I think we got a large group to sign up and a few that sound like they will definitely sign up before kickoff. I also got another donation today! Big thanks to everyone for all your generosity!!!

I was reminded tonight at the meeting that my "A" goal is not my only goal. I guess in the back of my mind I knew that but it was good to have someone actually ground me a bit. I have been very blessed the past year and a half that I have met or exceeded all of my major race goals, so I have built up this all or nothing mind set. But it is not all or nothing! This race doesn't define who I am as a person or as a runner. There will definitely be more races, more marathons, and more "A" goals in my future.

So here they are folks, my Columbus Marathon A,B, and C Goals!

A= 3:25 or faster, that's right 7:49 minute miles
B= 3:30 8:01 Pace
C= PR (Anything under 3:39:42)

Worst Case Scenario I raised a good chunk of money for a great cause and I will be down in Columbus with my family and good friends for my 24th birthday! My official TNT honoree will be completing her first half marathon and a large group of new friends will be crossing their first marathon finish lines, now that is an amazing thing!

The Feline in All of Us

tiger
You are a TIGER! You are the biggest of all cats and the strongest. You possess leadership qualities. Tigers are capable of swimming very well, unlike most other big cats. Most of the time you win your fights or arguments but because you are strong physically and mentally, it's difficult to point out your weaknesses and enemies. You are very responsible and keep up with your duties/chores and look after your friends and family.

Which FELINE are you?
brought to you by Quizilla

I would have to say this quiz was 97% on the money except I am obviously a White Tiger! Thanks to FelineVamp for the quiz.

Last night I found myself seriously doubting, well, myself. Specifically wondering what I am thinking in regards to the Columbus Marathon on Sunday. I mean who the heck am I to think that I am going to go and PR by 10-20 minutes. I mean really?

In all seriousness I know that my goals are reasonable and that my legs should be capable of finishing Columbus in less than 3 hours and 30 minutes. But Su's Chicago experience has left me feeling a bit worried. I mean she was just as prepared (if not more so) than I am now. Why didn't she reach her goal?

It just goes to show that on any given day I could make it or I couldn't.

So to prepare this head of mine the next few days I really need to focus on the positives.

When I was younger and running 5k's for high school cross country my mom would always tell me to use visualization. Specifically to imagine running beside a white tiger (you were wondering how the intro was going to fit in to the post right?) and to get power from that.

When I was 18 I went and got myself a white tiger tattoo on my back so that I no longer had to imagine it, I could actually have my white tiger right there with me running at all times and watching over me. I am sure that I do get power from my inner white tiger. I was made aware of the outer power I draw from it too in Boston. Somewhere around 13.1 miles (at this point I was already in a lot of pain and starting to run water stop to water stop, yikes) I heard a guy shout "hey we must be brother and sister" :) I looked at him to see he had a very nice white tiger tat on his leg. I found that the small bond we shared between our tattoos and our obvious love of the same animal gave me a little boost I wouldn't have had otherwise.

So the next few days I will be thinking about my inner tigress and drawing positive steam from her. Repeat after me "I am strong, I am tough, I will break 3:30!" And hopefully these little legs of mine will hold out for a great race!

I found I was also looking for some other outside inspiration and found some great new blogs about running etc. Links are added at the right check them out! There are some great recounts of races as well as good entries about everyday training!

Tuesdays=Track

Well most Tuesday's that is. I wasn't going to post tonight, not really in the mood but B2 sent me some good pics from an old track workout so I decided to write up something short.

We went to the tow path tonight since most are either out of town, busy, injured, or tapering this week. But we got in an easy 6.5 miles in about 55 minutes. Not very fast and I didn't feel very good. Oh well. I didn't have a large lunch and I always feel weird taper week.

Went to Hoggy's afterwards and I ate a lot! Which probably means I really needed some more energy. I have to eat better this week for sure.

I am off to shower then bed. I need to get to bed early this week and get used to waking up early for Sunday.

I believe it poured like a mother this night and I didn't have a change of clothes so M let me borrow her shirt.

Exhausted

I am super tired. I worked long Thursday and hard Friday but still didn't finish up with the memos that were due. So I was back into work today after my morning run.

Last night we went to B's for dinner. I had a great time. It was nice to get out and relax in a no pressure friends situation, imagine no running involved even! We just hung out made pizzas and chatted. Got to see B2 and his new wifes honeymoon pics from Hawaii. Can you say jealous? They are so cute and it looks like they had a blast!

Woke up early this morning to get down to Brecksville for the last pre Columbus TNT marathon run. It was drizzly and chilly but I had a good run. 10 miles in 1:16.52 so about 7:40 pace. Both my calves were tight and I didn't have breakfast so I am happy with that. Scary thought though I have to hold between 7:38-8:01 pace to run between 3:20 or 3:30. Yikes! Not going to think about it, the legs will just have to do it next Sunday!

We had pancakes afterwards this morning which was good because I didn't get a chance to eat again until I got home from work around 8:30.

Su runs Chicago tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for under 4!

Track

Went to the Bedford Track tonight but kids were having a soccer game so we did a long "warm up."

Approximate Route, Thanks Su!

That took me 40:26.

Then I did a mile hard on the track 6:23.80 And a 1/2 mile cool down. So somewhere slightly over 6 miles.

My calves were sore and I felt like I had no energy the first 5 miles, but I cranked out the mile hard with no problem.

For some reason I was really irritable. Maybe the drive in?

P is over and we are watching "The Day After Tomorrow". Had an excellent dinner of crab dip and pasta with shrimp! Yum!

Have you had your daily dose of...

Mind over Marathon

We had our mind over marathon meeting tonight for TNT. 33 people doing Columbus and San Fran showed up. So that was good. The meeting wasn't about what I expected but was definitely a good workshop for newbies to running and marathons. It went over the ins and outs of race weekend, which I think is important. Especially in Tri's I find if I walk through the whole weekend including the day before up through and post race it helps to relax and focus on what counts race day.

Went and ran 6 miles in the dark afterwards with B and Coach K. Just took it easy since B was recovering, coach K is injured, and I am tapering! So just under 9 minute miles.

I really only went because I wanted to avoid dinner by myself. I don't know why I have such an issue with eating by myself, well by the time we finished running the guys wanted to go home so I ended up grabbing a sub and gatorade from Subway and headed home to eat "by myself" anyways. Hubby at least kept me company even though he already had dinner hours ago.

Haven't heard back from the bank yet so we will see. We are still deciding between two financing plans so we need to settle that and wait 7-10 days to find out if we get the loan.

A Little Help

Here is some help on the movie quotes (previous entry go guess before reading these!)

1. The future's all yours, you lousy bicycles.

2. I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl. We ate lobster and drank pina coladas. At sunset we made love like sea otters. *That* was a pretty good day.

6. What is it about you that makes a man with a hundred forty-seven I.Q. feel like a dribbling idiot?

8. People used to think it was strange 'cause I breast-fed him 'til he was almost five, but I say - hunh, just look at the results!

9. Where is it?
Here. It's all right here in my noodle. The rest is just scribbling.

10. In time, you'll drop dead and I'll come to yor funeral in a red dress.

11. I do, I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact, and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you, or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slander at any time in the future.

12. What the hell happened?
Somebody left the door open and the wrong dogs came home.

14. Yes, what seems to be the problem now?
Well, I imagine that we've run into some bad weather.
You don't have to imagine just look out the window!

Morning Run and more Movie Trivia

Had a wonderful 17 mile run today! I thought about making it 20 but didn't want to squander a good run with a miserable last three miles. My feet held up although around 12 my left foot had some serious issues. Shooting pain in the middle of my foot. Nice, but luckily it went away after 5 minutes. I made it to the water stop in 44 minutes today! I stayed with the "big dogs" even. Wow. I don't know what I felt I had to prove today but it felt good. Finished off the 15 course in 2:02:00 and then went out for two more with E, D, and S. It started to get warm so I called it a day. Total time was 2:22:13 so that last two miles may have been long but it all evens out on the roads.

I have no idea how we get from the trails to the hill :)
B ran a 2:54 today in Twin Cities!!! Hot Stuff! I am so excited! I can't wait for Columbus!

My mom is joining the movie trivia bandwagon! Some of these are tough!

1. I have vision, and the rest of the world wears bifocals.

2. Rise and shine, campers, and don't forget your booties, 'cause its cooold out there today!

3. When you first entered the restaurant, I thought you were handsome....then, of course, you spoke.

4. I'm no flibberty ibberty gibbit!

5. I take my hat off for one thing, and one thing only.

6. I am decent. I also happen to be naked.

7. There can't be any feelings between the likes of me and the likes of you.

8. I know we're all pretty small in the big scheme of things, and I suppose the most you can hope for is to make some kind of difference, but what kind of difference have I made? What in the world is better because of me?

9. I was staring through the cage of those meticulous ink strokes - at an absolute beauty.

10. I just want you to know no matter what you do, you're gonna die, just like everybody else.

11. I just love watching your ass when you walk. Is that beautiful or what? Don't go near him, he's mine!

12. I wouldn't give you the combination to the gates of hell.

13. My grandfather used to work for your grandfather. Of course, the rates have gone up.

14. Well, I didn't know that I was gonna be flying to Boston tonight, then take a cattle car back to New York and walk through a hurricane from Grand Central Station. Now, if I don't get a room you people are fourth on my list to get sued! Now I want to see some action!

15. Though we adore men individually, we agree that as a group they're rather stupid.

Inspection Complete

Had the home inspected this morning. Most everything is A OK! There are a few minor issues and a couple of things that may cost some significant dollars to fix but I don't think anything that would affect us wanting the house. See Pics Below!

We are meeting with the bank mortgage agent tomorrow to do paperwork. Let's hope everything goes as planned!

Got my check for the truck but it was made out to me and my mother so mom and dad stopped by to sign and visit, also got to check out the house because I wanted my dads professional opinion on the electrical. I think they like it (the house not the electrical, my dad had never seen knob and tube wiring and his coworker thought it may cost upwards of $2-3k to replace). Luckily the whole house isn't knob and tube wiring so it may be possible for us to change it out a little at a time. We will see, hopefully my Uncle R will check out the photos and let us know how much he thinks it would cost to fix.

I gotta run 16-20 tomorrow morning. Hopefully A will show. I think I am just going to go at 8 and run long that way I get to sleep in even though waking up early means I am done earlier.
