Flying Pig

For lack of anything really drawing me and the convenience of the race being located near David's sister and a few of our good friends I am putting Flying Pig up on the race list for 2007 as my spring "A" race. It's not an easy course but I am going to aim for a PR regardless and realize that I may fail.

It won't be for lack of effort though. I've jotted down the FIRST program and am going to make friends with the treadmill for speedwork on those days when the track isn't accessible this winter. I guess I have decided that jumping down to the 5k PR by February doesn't make much sense and I will most likely get there along the path of training to PR the marathon anyways.

I have definitely lost some speed with the lack of regular weekly mileage and the long weekend workouts. It's starting to come back. We'll find out shortly how much. I think my first speed workout is for the week of the 15th.

The training plan for the marathon is 16 weeks and includes 5 20 milers. Seems heavy to me but it also is only 3 runs a week so I think it is doable. I also have started to realize that my body responds well to repeated long training. I kind of adapt and the more long workouts I get in the better my body responds to going longer. Let's hope this holds true this time around.

So this is what the next 16 weeks of training are going to look like.

Monday- Swim and Strength
Tuesdays- Tempo Run
Wednesday- Easy Group Run and/or Swim and Pilates
Thursday- Speedwork
Friday- Strength or Pilates
Saturday- Bike/Swim
Sunday- Long Run

Depending on how I take to the earlier wake up call I may try to include a mile run every morning before doing anything else. See if I can start a streak!

Damn, girl! Where's your rest day? Make sure you take one every once in awhile. We don't need you getting sick!

I'm so glad you made it out on Thursday. What fun!

That doesn't seem to include much rest! I look forward to seeing how FIRST works for someone more advanced than me!

YEAH!!! I'll move you to the Pig Pen!!

And I thought my 3 20 milers were going kill me!!

Getting jiggy with the piggy? Nice choice.

Of course, I'm biased. I got my PR there!

Friday's are going to be really light girls! Max of 20 minutes strength training or pilates.

Do you ever pause ? I think physically you can handle this plan, but mentally you'll become dull and tired of running after a while.

what's the use of "streakrunning" anyway? I suggest you focus on quality workouts rather than wasting your energy in doing stuff like trotting along every day.

I think running wise this is actually quite a light plan. It is only 3 real runs a week. Even if I added 4 one mile runs to that on off days the total weekly mileage will be well under what most marathoners reccommend. I think if anything this plan is light on run miles and heavy on cross training.

As for the streak it is more of a consistency thing for me. I have a tendency to easily fall into the day off becoming two days off which becomes 3 days off etc plan. I think running one easy mile a day minimum is light enough to keep fresh but enough to make running a habit. Added bonus I get 10 minutes of fresh air every morning. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Yahooooooo!

I PR'd at the Pig, although it wasn't too hard to PR off my first mary. :) I really don't think it's as hard as everyone makes it out to be--the way some people talk you'd think you'd be climbing Everest or something! ha ha! Definitely a great course--sweet!

The Flying Pig... what a great name! Sounds like a very ambitious training plan.

Good luck!

Sounds like a great race and fun. I know the rabbit will be happy.

Good luck on the marathon training. Looking at your schedule reminds me somewhat of mine, with a different focus. I have no scheduled "rest" days. I figure swimming and pilates is rest, since fortunately for me swimming is easy. What is hard is the long runs, so that is really what I need to concentrate on to get some form of fitness for what I attempt to do this year. You can do it. As for adapting to the long workouts, I think that is realy what happens when you get into it more. You start to thrive on the long stuff and anything other than that leaves you wondering. Again, you can do it!

I've always wanted to do that marathon. i like cincy. Could do without 7 hills in a marathon city. now... where would i find a "monkeys fly out my butt" marathon? you have to do that if you do the flying pig.

We'll see you there then maybe.... Bridge is doing the Pig as well.

Good luck with the training program. I always expect to see good results come race day. You're a clutch performer.

HA! I really like that last comment! He needs to come over and do the Flying Monkey Marathon!

You are so much more dedicated than me. Speedwork on a treadmill? That makes me cringe. A lot. You rock! But you already knew that.

I'm not convinced you have your heart in it..... and what's with a "Spring A Race" .... do I have to have races for each season that's like ..... (*pause for thinking, with eyes staring at ceiling*) .... 4 "A" races for the year.

Wow - you are going to be in tip top shape! I agree with Jodi - where the heck are the rest days. You need to let your body recover too so you can keep up the workouts. As my coach used to say (we took of Sundays) - Hard workouts all week - take off Sunday to pray you can make it through the next week - haha!

are you skipping boston?

E-Speed said...

yep no Boston this year for me. It is awfully expensive to go every year. I am sticking to all local races this year unless some money drops out of the sky and pays for my travels ;)

I am waffling. Not sure if I can get into shape to smoke the pig, so maybe I'll just play pacer.

A "monkeys fly out my butt" marathon? Well, there is the Harpeth Hills FLYING MONKEY Marathon. Is that close enough? www.harpethhillsmarathon.com.
