Pigskin Pics (I should be getting better ones from B2 later)

GO Blue!

Inaugural Pigskin Classic

Had a blast at the downtown 5k this morning. It was the first pigskin classic. They gave out blue or red shirts depending on your team preference. I of course chose blue!

I will post pics later but here is a quickie run down on the race.

Took 2nd overall for females and am very pleased with my run. I was not expecting anything spectacular so I was pleasantly surprised to come in under 21 minutes. Especially considering the windy conditions and the hill coming up the stretch.

Splits:

Mile 1:6:23
Mile 2:6:49
Mile 3.1: 7:42
Time 20:55
Pace 6:44

Not too shabby.

I got a really awesome embroidered fleece blanket! B2 took 9th overall males so he got the blanket too! Go BLUE!!!

Back to running ;)

Went out with CK, B, and Su tonight for a run. We did about 53 minutes. It actually wasn't too chilly out and the snow had subsided. (although we still have snow cover here in Euclid)

We probably were running right around 8 minutes miles I would guess so a little over 6 miles tonight maybe.

Tomorrow B2 convinced me to do the pigskin 5k. I will be proudly wearing Blue and Gold! So I am off to bed to wake up early for that. Not expecting anything spectacular in the racing department. Just going to go and have a good time.

CK got us a GREAT housewarming gift. I will put it up tomorrow and post pics! Any guesses on what he got us?

Tonight was Su's B-DAY! You are still younger than me though ;)

Here are a few pics before I hit the hay.

Happy Birthday Su!

Conference

The TMDL conference went very well. (IMHO) I had a very good time and came away with a much better understanding of how the EPA and states view the TMDL program. I also think that we represented my company very well and helped the conference to be a success.

Some of the speakers talks were really good. I especially enjoyed hearing about some of the USGS projects as well as some interesting eco-friendly BMP type work going on mostly in Seattle. Long story short I am pumped up about getting a rain barrel and rain garden installed at our house ASAP and if my hubby will let me working on a green roof for the garage and some other treatments to decrease the storm water runoff from our rain gutters. I think it is especially important since we are literally just a block upstream of Lake Erie.

YES!

We figured out the furnace! (Rather David did, with a little input from Brooke) We have heat upstairs!

The Elevator Man!

Didn't take many pics but here are a few.

IT IS FREEZING IN THIS ROOM! First task on our to do list is to get the furnace pipes looked at. The upstairs vent isn't shooting out any hot air at all. It is nice and toasty downstairs but absolutely frigid up here. We also need to get the attic insulated asap.

I am off to take care of some stuff and perhaps run. I am absolutely exhausted from the conference. Thank you everyone for your comments! I will try to address them soon!

Quick Post...

From the BOONIES! In MI. I am at a work conference so this will be brief.

It is FREEZING HERE! I can officially say it is WINTER! I ran in the snow for the first time today! I did not come prepared for the cold weather running wise or normal wise!

I have not had much time but I managed to get in a quick 20 minutes yesterday and 20 minutes worth of hills today.

Can't wait to get back to the house to see my hubby and cats!

Hope everyone's week is going well!

Wow

So I forgot I would actually have internet briefly today before I head to Lansing for work.

Thanks Su for posting pics!!! They look great! I will be posting more Thursday or Friday.

FINALLY I got out and ran this morning. My first run in the new neighborhood. I just did an out and back from the house to the video store and post office. Literally running errands. Kind of fun :) I just did 30 minutes so probably a little over 3 miles. But hey a run is a run. I am planning on running with my sister this week since I will be up in Lansing. I need to start upping mileage for the 50k but I don't want to get too heavy too fast.

The move went incredibly well. I think we had everything in and out in under 3 hours. Pretty darn impressive. We had a TON of people there and that really helped. We are so lucky to have such good (and strong!) friends and family! Most everyone was able to hang out for a bit afterwards those that didn't missed out on some excellent Lasanga that my MIL made.

We still have boxes to unpack but the important stuff is all put away and we are settling in well.

I am off on a work trip so it is kinda of strange being in the house for two days then having to leave right away. I hope the cats and my hubby cope okay :)

I will post more about the move later!

Thanks to everyone who helped Saturday! We REALLY appreciate it!

Helping Out, by Curly Su

Today I helped Liz move into her new house...and out of her old apartment, of course. I tried to take pictures, but I must say...it's hard to take pictures while people are moving stuff in and out. Here are the best ones I managed.

The whole process didn't end up taking that long, due to SO many of her awesome friends and family helping out. We had Liz and David all moved into their new house in just a few hours. Her new house is SO great...more pictures to come, I'm sure.

Moved in!

No Internet

Sigh, the phone service stopped at the apartment today. And DSL won't be up and running at the house till Tuesday. I, however, will be away from the internet until THURSDAY because of a work trip! Gasp, whatever will I do?

But not to fear. My trusted partner in blogging crime will be posting some pics from the move tomorrow for you so those should tide you over till I am back!

I am definitely ready to get back out and running. Last night as I exited my work building I found my legs carrying me swiftly down the hill. I was running all the way to the car. So while my mind knows this break is good for me (let my foot and hip recover a bit) my legs are ready to get back out on the roads! They will just have to wait until Sunday though!

The house is mostly clean and ready for the major move tomorrow. We have tons of friends and family coming to help so it should be a relatively quick and painless process. Tonight we have to finish packing and get everything dusted off.

BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE COMING TO HELP! We are truly blessed to have such wonderful friends and family in our life. It is really quite amazing. Who knew we would end up here :)

Can't wait for everything to get into the house so we can all hang out at the new place! Who's on for Settlers? And B and Coach K's faves Catch Phrase and Scrabble! ;) Get ready to get your game on!

Exhausted

I thought I was going to feel bad about not running since Sunday, but, I DON'T! I am exhausted. My legs are sore, my back is sore, and my arms are sore! Cleaning is tough! Man there is a lot of dust in this house! We are getting there though. We cleaned half of the blinds now and all the floors except the basement have been swept, mopped, and vacuumed. Bathrooms, kitchen cupboards, and fridge are clean. Hubby is waiting to tackle the stove until next week.

Taking more boxes over in the morning!

Got a ticket for running a red on the way over tonight. Let's hope that doesn't cost too much.

Some pics below!

Night!

Welcome Home!

My first piece of mail at the house!

Hubby sweeping the new living room

I can fit all of my nice dishes in the cabinets!!! Before we had one set still in its box!

I survived (and other random thoughts)

Got my cavity filled today. Between the Nitrous gas and the dental assistant letting me babble and squeeze her hand I survived the novocaine shots. Two of them! I actually didn't feel the pricks at all. That topical must have been way better than the topical they gave me for my cleaning. So all that fretting over nothing.

Once the shot was over they took away the gas. You "come down" super fast. But the drilling was fine. A little noisy but not too bad. They sure do have a lot of nice torture instruments in there though!

After we ate dinner last night we headed to the house. Had a little scare because there was a car parked in front of the house and the living room light was on. But the owner must have left the light on when he dropped off the garage keys, and flowers! How sweet! First thing when we walked in the kitchen this huge vase full of flowers was waiting for us. I thought that was a very nice gesture.

Spent last night cleaning the kitchen and bathrooms. It is dusty in there! And we are definitely going to have to put a new coat of paint on all of the rooms on the main level. But it is ours! Woot Woot. Tonight, more cleaning, and hauling over the little boxes. Our apartment is a crazy mess right now. The cats are not quite sure what to make of it.

Running is going to be on hold this week. It is probably a good thing. I had promised my feet a break after Columbus and never gave it to them. But all the cleaning and hauling boxes will definitely keep away the extra pounds in the meantime.

The left side of my face is numb and I am starving. But I can't eat for fear of biting myself. Hopefully I can manage a cup of coffee!

Oh Issues 6 and 7 in Cuyahoga passed! And that is definitely a good thing!

Homeowners!

After making myself sick over waiting to hear from the title company today (I restrained myself for over an hour after when they said they would call) I finally called them and told them I had to know if we were filed yet or not!

The lady took pity on me and called whoever is in charge of filing with the county. And....we are filed!!!

David is going to get the keys from the homeowner now!

Huge sigh of relief.

Now I can start stressing over the move! ;)

Why I Tri

...because the grim reaper catches us all. But when he catches me, the son of a bitch is going to be hunched over, wheezing and clutching his chest.

IronWil is having a little contest over on her blog to get the top ten reasons "Why I Tri" for a new shirt design.

I really liked this one.

Go over and vote!

And it is election day! Go to the polls and vote!

Waiting...

To hear from the title company....we were hoping it would transfer today since David has today and tomorrow off work. But they said we would hear from them by 4 if it did, blah! Since tomorrow is election day we should hear from them by 2 if it transfers tomorrow. Uggh waiting sucks! Meanwhile our apartment is slowly filling to the brim with boxes.

Amazing

Playing Catch Up

So I haven't blogged my workouts for the past few days, no I haven't been sitting on my duff, okay well maybe a little bit. But I did get out and run Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday went out with Ta,Su, and J. We did about 5.5 miles somewhere between 9 and 10 minute pace. Very relaxed. We chatted and enjoyed the beautiful weather and fall scenery. Very refreshing!

Yesterday I went out to the Sunday group run. I was planning on taking it easy and running about 8 miles or so. Instead right off the bat I found myself running with E (a sub 3 hour marathoner!) ahead of everyone else. I stayed with her for about 4 miles then was on my own till the water stop at 6. Got to the water stop in 45. Second fastest split to the water stop ever, and on an extremely windy and rainy day to boot! I stopped for water and had some gel. Waited for W and A to catch up then ran a few miles with them before I turned off to finish the 10 mile loop while they went on for the 12. I felt drained, but kept a good pace. I totally forgot about all the rollers on the 10 mile loop, and here I thought I was saving myself from the misery of the hill on the 12 mile loop. Yikes! But I finished up in an hour and 15 minutes. 7:33 pace. Not too shabby for a Sunday morning long run.

I am paying for this weeks "high" mileage today (only 30 miles, but I hardly ever do more than that). My right hip is a bit sore, and the inside of my right ankle. So today is a rest day and I am making a pact to get in more cross training this week!

Getting a Little Ahead of myself

Thanks to everyone, online and off! that listened to me rant about the Ironman this weekend.

I have decided to postpone my Ironman Debut. I am, however, going to sign up for Steelhead Half or Greater Cleveland Half Ironman. Will decide in the next few days.

Talked with a few of my running club friends and I think that I need to get a few more marathons in, set a few more PRs before I start thinking about moving on to something bigger. Realistically there is a sub 3:15 marathon in these legs and I shouldn't throw that away to do something that I can still do in a few years. So the plan is to get faster and fitter, keep doing international tris and move up to the half ironman this year. Set a few more PRs and when I start to peak, tackle the Ironman.

So here is the tentative major race schedule for the year:
Buckeye 50 K in January (????) Not sure about this one yet may have to wait until 2007
Boston in April
Steelhead Half Iron in August
Chicago Marathon in October

I have a tendency of jumping into things head first. I am all about instant gratification. Hence my jumping into triathlons and marathons in the same year. I think waiting for the Ironman will be good for me. Teach me some patience! And when I finally do become an Ironman, the victory will be that much sweeter!

Until then I can dream!

What to do what to do?

Tomorrow is registration for Ironman Florida. I am contemplating it. What does blogland think?
Jump straight from international distance to Ironman? Or ease into it with Steelhead Half Ironman in August? And then maybe Ironman Wisconsin or Lake Placid in 07?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Signed and Sealed

We just got done signing all of our papers. Title should transfer Monday or Tuesday!!!

Do these shoes make my feet look fat?

Sorry, just staring at my feet. My Asics were muddy from this mornings trail run and my Brooks were out in the car so I opted for my old Saucony's (Grid Hurricane's) this morning on my way to work.

How on earth did I use to run in these things? These shoes are so bulky! It is no wonder I took 12 minutes off my marathon time, these shoes alone would have added that much! ;)

Can a 120 lb chick really need that much shoe? Obviously not since my feet seem to be pretty content in my Brooks which are much more slimming. ;)

I guess I may have liked these because of the support (I wore grid hurricane's throughout college), I do notice that I can't go very long in my new racing flats without my ankle bothering me, too much pronation.

Got out onto the trails this morning before work. It is warm out! 55 and climbing. It was really windy but the trees blocked most of the gusts, and anything I did feel was warm. Is it really November?

The trail was gorgeous this morning! Yellow leaves everywhere. I saw a buck run by at one point. Tried to grab a pic but he was too quick for me. I am so glad I found my mini cam. The images aren't great but it is fun to take photos while running.

Did my regular N. C. route on the Bridle Trails. Somewhere around 4.5 miles in 38 minutes (I did walk about 50 ft up the killer hill by the castle) I was beat! But I recovered, took a pic, then headed up the third tier of the hill!

I walked from the big tree to where I took the pic, lazy, I know!
This is the second of three tiers on this hill. It hits about 30 minutes into my run and it is brutal!

Speeding through the woods.

I want to know how Wil gets such fantastic photos of herself during training. I mean seriously, do you have a professional running photographer chasing you around? I am way jealous!

And now for something completely different

Upper Arm Toning!

3*10 each arm of:
One-arm tricep extensions
Bicep Curls

3*10:
"raise the roof" not sure what the real name for this one is
lateral front arm raise-this one was tough!

2* 10 each arm:
Tricep Kick Backs

Will wait and see how my arms feel tomorrow before adding any more ;)

Dentist appointment was all right. My gums hurt pretty bad, and I have a cavity :( Next Wednesday I get a filling. I have an abnormal fear of needles so this will be extremely stressful. They have promised me lots of hallucinogenic nitrous to calm me down before the shot. I will probably still freak. But at least my teeth are clean and the dentist said other than the small cavity my teeth look great. I am scheduled for another cleaning in 6 months.

The lady cleaning my teeth was extremely nice. She even gave me a cherry topical to help numb my gums (it wore off rather quickly). But the gesture was nice. She said she has never seen that much tartar on someone my age, I always have to be the "best" at everything ;). She said I was probably going to lose weight from all the tartar she scraped off, I don't know about that but I probably lost 2 pounds from all the bleeding. They REALLY need to make those vacuum tubes some color other than clear! I almost cried twice the scraping hurt my gums so bad. Now I remember why I don't like to go to the dentist!

She also told me I am a good candidate for bleaching. Apparently my teeth are all one even color, just not white! :) So if anyone wants to give me the money for professional cleaning I can go make these babies PEARLY WHITES! ;) I was tempted to bleach before the wedding. Maybe I will try those Crest Strips if the budget allows for it...

Don't think I am going to run tonight. Don't feel like going out by myself in the dark. I am working on waking up when the alarm clock goes off so maybe I will actually run in the morning tomorrow when it is light!

PS

Title Company is meeting with us to sign papers on Friday!!! Woot Woot. Closing should be finalized Monday or Tuesday!

Running in the dark with company

Last night headed to the tow path. Ran with the regular crew. We just got in around 6 miles somewhere around 8:50 pace. It was DARK and FOGGY! If I had been by myself I would have been freaking out :) The girls and I managed to freak out when we came upon our guy friend A. We didn't know he was coming and we were just talking about the dangers of girls running by themselves at night. None of us said anything, we all just started to run closer and slower. Bizarre. But it was okay. Just A slowing down to greet us :) Still freaked the heck out of me!

It was starting to get pretty chilly last night but I guess it is going to warm up the rest of the week. B said 70...in November? Yikes!

I am off to the dentist this morning. I haven't been since college. Yikes. I finally sucked it up and called my husbands dentist yesterday and they squeezed me in first thing this morning. I am not a fan of the dentist. I have sensitive gums and they always bleed when the cleaning chicks use that scraper and floss. Ouch :( Oh well with all the coffee I drink I should probably be going twice a year, not twice a century ;)

Running in the Dark

So I got into work early today so I could try to beat the sunset for a short run. Didn't quite beat it. Dang it gets dark early!!! And rush hour traffic sucks!

I still got in a 30 minute easy run. Around 3.25 miles. The weather was nice, a bit warm even. There were leaves all over the path. What I could see was rather pretty.

So I think until I start official Boston training I am going to try to run more often but less miles. AKA more than 3 days a week but less mileage each run. My running pals call this kind of mileage "junk" miles. But really I want to give my body some rest while not gaining any holiday weight and I think exercising 20-30 minutes a day when I can squeeze it in is better than nothing. For some reason I have a really hard time fitting in longer runs unless I absolutely have to during these "dark" months.

Plans for the night include watching a bunch of crap on TV because after tonight we are getting rid of cable for good. It shouldn't be a big deal. We mostly watch movies anyways so we will probably just rent more DVD's. Nix that, hubby is zooming to football so plans include bed! :) Maybe I will wake up early and swim!

Blast from the past

So I am trying to pump myself up for Boston 2006 and was reading through my 2005 report over on tblog. Eventually I want to transfer all of my entries over here to blogger. But that is a long way off.

But I think this one is worthy of reposting here. This is more for my own searching ease than anyone else so don't feel any pressure to read unless you really want to!

Boston 2005 Race Report (Originally posted here)

"Okay here is the scoop on Boston FINALLY!

Woke up at 5 am Monday morning and couldn’t fall back asleep. So I showered grabbed my stuff and headed down to the subway. It was completely empty! One other runner got on the train at my stop.

So all my stressing the night before was a HUGE waste of time. I got to the girls hotel way early so I ate a bagel and banana and hunkered down on a sofa with a copy of Runner’s World.

About an hour later the girls came down and we headed to Boston Commons to get on the bus! Yes that’s right big yellow school buses are the official transport to the start of the Boston Marathon :) (Unless you are a pro of course they get those fancy shuttle buses, with police escorts!)

We got in line and saw some of the guys. MG, SG, and a friend of theirs got in line with us. We pissed some lady off when MG “accidentally” jumped into a middle of a bus line but we ended up finding a shorter line anyway.

So it took about a half hour to get on the bus and once on it was another 45-60 minutes before we got to Hopkinton. I just relaxed and listened to everyone else’s conversations. I found out you can actually enter the Boston Marathon without qualifying through certain charities. I don’t know how much they have to raise, but I hope it is a lot!!! These people are certainly much better than the bandits though :) All a part of the traditions of Boston though so I just took it all in.

Most people hang out in Athlete’s Village once they get to Hopkinton but my club goes to a church and lounges in the basement. This ended up being really nice for me because I think I might have freaked out being around 20,000 other runners for two hours before the race. The church atmosphere was pretty low key and I was able to eat, sunscreen up, and take care of any pre race jitters, etc. without worrying about anything else.

About 30 minutes before the start B, R, and I went and dropped off our bags on the yellow buses then headed to our Corrals. Corrals in Boston are by number so I was in the 13th Corral, far behind the Elite runners!!!

I realize then what a newbie I am to marathoning :) The guys had told me to pin my gels to my shorts and tuck them in. Which works great as long as you pin your gels on the top above where the actual gel is :) I actually punctured both my gel packets on accident and realized in the start that I had some gel sticking to my thighs and the inside of my shorts :) Lovely.

After about 5 minutes in the Corral they started the national Anthem and about then you start to realize how amazing this is standing in a crowd of 20,000 other runners getting ready to run the granddaddy of all marathons. The elite women at this point are already about 25 minutes into their race. And the gun is getting ready to go off.

All this excitement builds up and then you realize how much different this start is than other races. In no race I have ever done has it taken over 12 minutes to actually get to the starting line. So it was slightly anticlimactic but still really amazing after you come over a small hill and hit the starting line you look out in front of you and all you can see in front of you is road filled with waves of runners. Absolutely incredible.

From there until Wellesley everything seems pretty similar. The crowd never thins out and it is rolling hills with a net decline until the half way mark. Surprisingly my IT Band wasn’t bothering me at all and my shoulder didn’t feel too bad. My feet started to blister REALLY early in the race, like mile 3. So I knew that wasn’t going to look pretty when I finished.

Right before I got to Wellesley College I could feel my legs chafing. It was about 71 degrees on the course and not a lick of shade to be seen. Luckily just as I thought to myself “this is going to get ugly” I heard the medical tent volunteers crying out “Vaseline!” I sprinted so quickly over to their side of the road and grabbed a Tongue Depressor covered in Vaseline and smeared it all over my legs. Nice visual huh?

Unfortunately that left me with Vaseline all over my hands too :) I added that mess to the gel on my shorts and continued on.

Shortly after the Vaseline stop I hear this roar of sounds. At that point you can’t see where it is coming from about a half mile away you see the Wellesley College Girls! They are all lined up on the right side of the street held back by a fence. Most of them are leaning far over the fence high fiving runners as they go by. Others are holding signs like “Kiss me if you’re from Oklahoma.” They are all cheering at the top of their lungs. I had been running on the left the whole way so far but moved over to the right to high five pretty much all of the girls. Their energy was so amazing. It gave you this incredible boost of energy. Which is good but sad because you are going to need that energy a lot more in just over a mile.

All this time I have been getting water and Gatorade from the stops every mile on the left and walking through the stops. No need to waste energy trying to gulp down water while running too fast. I made it to Boston now that I was there I should try to enjoy the ride.

Most of the water I took ended up getting dumped over my head. I was feeling pretty hot and it seemed to help. I also jumped at anyone who had ice and held it in my hands for as long as I could stand to help keep cool.

Shortly after Wellesley and the half waypoint you start to add in some serious up hills to the rolling hills. At this point my quads were pretty much already a wreck from all the downhills, and my left calf started to bother me.

The rest of the race I pretty much ran water stop to water stop. I didn’t feel good but I could have felt worse for sure. I didn’t walk at any point except through the water stops. And I made it up the Newton Hills and Heartbreak Hill in pretty good time. I think I ran a 9:22 mile up Heartbreak. So I was happy with that.

I was expecting my parents and David to be pretty close to the finish but they ended up being a little before the 26-mile mark. I heard my mom screaming as I passed, I turned and waved, then trucked on up the small incline before you turn onto Boylston Street and can finally see the finish line.

I didn’t have any amazing last mile splits like I did in Richmond, but I was still proud, and unlike Richmond I was actually happy as I crossed the finish line. And despite the stresses I have been having I have been pretty happy since!

After the marathon my legs felt pretty bad, but I was expecting that. I walked along with the crowd, grabbed some water, took off my chip, got my Mylar Blanket, and traded my chip for my finishers medal! And trekked over to the buses.

I got a frozen smoothie drink from some volunteer and spent most of that time trying to open it. Finally before I grabbed my bag I had to have a volunteer open it for me :) He had a hard time too so it wasn’t just post marathon jitters keeping me from the frozen deliciousness ;)

I got my bag and headed to the family meeting area. I threw my stuff down near the H sign and worked on getting out of my shoes, into flip-flops. Out of my soaked sports bra into my Boston tank, and tried to stretch a bit. My parents and David showed up as I finished off my smoothie and was getting ready to start looking for them.

I got a phone call from my favorite aunt ;) you know who you are :) wishing me well. I definitely felt loved at that moment.

We walked all the way over to Boston Commons to avoid the mad rush to the subway near the finish.

Got back to our hotel and our handicap room payed off. I was able to sit on the edge of the tub and spray my legs with ice cold water. My baby sis called while I was spraying, and I was glad to hear from her. Her support at this point in my life is very important to me and I am blessed to have such a great sister. We have not always gotten along but I am glad we come together when it really counts.

After I talked with her for a bit David and I met my parents down at the pool. I dipped my calf in the hot tub and took a lap around the pool then we got ready to go out for dinner.

We met a bunch of the SERC group at Joe Tecces. I had three beers and a steak! I felt I definitely deserved it :) We had a good time and it was nice to hang out with everyone after doing the marathon together. Everyone from SERC did well and I am proud to call them all my friends. I can’t express how blessed I am to have met up with such a great group of runners.

I was pretty wiped out after the three beers and multiple trips to the restroom (of course stairs were involved). So we headed back to the hotel. Climbing down the stairs to the subway was a trip! I must have looked horrible.

We packed our stuff (well David did anyways, and I attempted to help), and then headed to bed. We had to be up really early to catch our flight home. I actually made it to work and managed to work 6 or 7 hours before I couldn’t manage anymore :)

Since being back I have run twice and I can tell my quads are still sore but I feel pretty good and am looking forward to the summer racing season. Thanks to everyone who took the time to read this. I really appreciate your support!"
